SriLankan airlines cancels flight to Karachi after attack

Posted on 09 June 2014 by admin

COLOMBO, June 9 (Xinhua) — A flight from Sri Lanka's national carrier bound for Karachchi from Colombo was canceled on Monday after gunmen attacked the Karachi airport, the company said.

SriLankan Airlines are waiting for further instructions from Pakistani authorities for clearance to operate flights and passengers are being updated, the company told reporters in a statement.

Flights have been canceled after gunmen attacked one of Pakistan's biggest airports, killing at least 23 people, including all 10 of the attackers, international media reported.

The attack on Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan 's sprawling commercial hub of 18 million people, took place as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government tries to engage Pakistani Taliban militants in negotiations to end years of fighting.

Gun battles went on for several hours and television pictures showed fire raging at the airport as ambulances ferried casualties away, but by dawn on Monday, the army said the airport had been secured.
