Cinnamon Lakeside draws in after-tax profit of 74 percent 3rd quarter 2012

Posted on 17 February 2013 by TSL

Trans Asia Hotels PLC, owners of the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo adjudged the country’s best five-star hotel both in the 2010 and 2011 Sri Lanka Tourism Awards, has boosted both revenue and profitability substantially in the first nine months of the current financial year December 31, 2012. Interim results now with shareholders indicate that revenue was up 30% to Rs.2.2 billion while the profit after-tax was up 74% to Rs.623.3 million.

Cinnamon Lakeside was judged the country’s best luxury hotel in last year’s Business Travel awards.

Strong profit growth was possible despite a 14% increase in administrative expenses to Rs.157.2 million, an 8% increase in sales and market expenses to Rs.25 million and a 27% increase in other operating expenses to Rs.8.6 million, the results show.

The company had Rs.18.7 million net finance income during the nine months, up from Rs.2.3 million a year earlier, but its income tax was up 36% to Rs.40.3 million during the period under review.

The nine months results translated to an earning per share of Rs.1.24 against Rs.0.83 during the comparative period the previous year.

John Keells Holdings with 48.64% and Asian Hotels and Properties (controlled by JKH) with 43.41% are the dominant shareholders of Trans Asia. Other major shareholders include the Ceybank Unit Trust (2.50%), EPF (2.15%) and the ETF (0.31%).

Trans Asia has a stated capital of Rs.1.1 billion, a capital reserve of Rs.1.34 billion and revenue reserves of Rs.2.8 billion in its books. Total assets ran at Rs.6.16 billion and total liabilities of Rs.897 million.

Net assets per share had grown to Rs.26.30 from Rs.24.85 a year earlier and the company’s share traded at a high of Rs.92.50 and a low of Rs.69 during the December quarter. The share was last traded during this quarter at Rs.74.

The company derives rental income from investment property adjoining the hotel deriving a total revenue of Rs.21 million and a pre-tax profit of Rs.16.5 million on this account during the nine months under revenue.

The Asian Hotels interim statement said that the existing rental agreement on investment property of Trans Asia ended in May 2012 and the company will not enjoy rental income from the property till it is further rented out.

Well informed sources said that JKH planned to move some of its Glennie Street offices to the Trans Asia investment property block in the event of the mega property development project involving the JKH headquarters building and adjoining Ceylon Cold Stores property took off. However the group remains tight-lipped on these development plans.

The directors of the company are: Messrs. Susantha Ratnayake (Chairman), A.D. Gunewardene, J.R.F. Peiris, D.S.J. Pelpola (Resigned 26.06.2012), N.L. Gooneratne, Mrs. R.L. Nanayakkara (Resigned 26.06.2012), C.J.L. Pinto and E.H. Wijenaike (w.e.f. 27.06.2012
