Sri Lanka tourist arrivals up 3.2-pct in 2017, sharply short of target

Posted on 05 January 2018 by admin

Jan 05, 2018.

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals grew 3.2 percent to 2,116,407 million in 2017, falling sharply short of a 2.5 million target announced by Tourism Minister John Amaratunga, for the second year in a row.

Sri Lanka also failed to reach a 2.2 million target, which Minister Amaratunga said will be comfortably exceeded to 2.5 million in 2016.

The tourism ministry blamed the closure of the main airport for repairs (which was known before the target was set), a countrywide dengue epidemic and floods in the South for the anaemic growth.

But Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority data said December arrivals grew 8.8 percent to 244,536 from 224,791 in 2016, the ministry said.

India continued to be the top source market with 384,628 arrivals up 7.8 percent.

Chinese arrivals had fallen 1 percent to 268,952. UK was up 7.3 percent to 201,879.

The Katunayake airport was the entry point for 2,085,272 tourists, while 5,491 landed in Mattala, 10,569, entered from Colombo Harbour, 14,099 from Galle Harbour and 976 at other ports. (Colombo/Dec05/2018)

However, in 2008 the government of Mahinda Rajapaksa removed Emirates Airline CEO Peter Hill and redeemed 40% of its stake. The ‘Judwa 2’ star’s first-ever restaurant recently opened its doors in Colombo’s newest five-star hotel, Shangri-La.

Model-turned-actress Jacqueline Fernandez is bringing celebrity glamour to her native Sri Lanka. The leggy beauty, who has starred in a number of Bollywood flicks, has joined the ranks of a number of B-Town celebrities, including Shilpa Shetty-Kundra and Govinda, who have entered the culinary space and opened restaurants.

The ‘Judwa 2’ star’s first-ever restaurant recently opened its doors in Colombo’s newest five-star hotel, Shangri-La Hotel. It is only fitting that the sizzling siren names the eatery Kaema Sutra. While work on the restaurant has been going on for some time now, the menu is a collaborative effort between Jacqueline Fernandez and Sri Lankan celebrity chef Dharshan Munidasa. THE CHEF HAS HELMED TWO OF ASIA’S BEST RESTAURANTS — Nihonbashi and The Ministry of Crab.

Going by the images shared on Darshan Munidasa’s Instagram page, the restaurant’s decor has incorporated the popular Sri Lankan masks, which are both iconic and unmatched. The minimalist restaurant decor paves the way for an array of authentic Sri Lankan fare—dominated by fish and seafood dishes, which are an important part of Sri Lankan cuisine and Munidasa’s area of expertise. From Banana Leaf Barramundi to a variety of Sambols, Kaema Sutra sure knows how to put on a show with a Sri Lankan feast.

SIDE NOTE — a little birdie informed that Fernandez is all set to launch a new restaurant in Mumbai soon.

Indeed, Fernandez has added another feather to her cap. After establishing a successful career in the Indian film industry with films like ‘Kick’ and ‘Houseful 3’ to name a few, the actress has now laid her hands in the hotel industry.

The actress took to social media to share the news.

She shared the picture and captioned it, “So excited to announce my first restaurant Kaema Sutra with Dharshan Munidasa is now open in the brand new Shangri-La Colombo bringing you the yummiest Sri Lankan cuisine. See you there.”

The Kaema Sutra restaurant will serve Sri Lankan cuisine. On the work front, Fernandez has two films in her kitty ‘Drive’ and ‘Race 3’. Directed by filmmaker and writer Tarun Mansukhani, ‘Drive’ also stars Sushant Singh Rajput and ‘Race 3’ features Salman Khan, Saqib Salim, Bobby Deol, Daisy Shah and Anil Kapoor.
