SriLankan Airlines receives prestigious Four Star rating by Airline Passenger Experience Association

Colombo, September 28, 2017: SriLankan Airlines added another feather to its cap by being honoured with a prestigious Four Star Rating by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) in the first ever airline industry rating programme based solely on feedback from passengers.

Captain Suren Ratwatte, CEO of SriLankan Airlines, said: “We are delighted to receive this rating of excellence, which we consider extremely important since it was compiled using passenger feedback. We will continue our efforts to delight our customers and will aim to achieve Five Stars in the next edition of the rating.”

APEX (www.apex.aero) is the world’s only non-profit membership trade association dedicated to improving the entire airline passenger experience

Siva Ramachandra, Chief Commercial Officer of SriLankan, said: “This rating is the culmination of continuous teamwork and innovation by every employee of our airline and demonstrates that SriLankan has the ability to compete with the finest airlines in the sky.”

A total of 470 airlines worldwide were rated, with only 12% of airlines achieving five-star status and 14% reaching four-star status. Using a five-star scale, more than 500,000 flights were rated anonymously by passengers between 24th October 2016 and to 31st July 2017. Passengers rated their overall flight experience and also provided ratings in seat comfort, cabin service, food and beverage, entertainment and Wi-Fi. SriLankan Airlines was placed in the Major Regional Airline category, with the other categories being Global Airlines and Low Cost Carriers.

The awards were presented at a gala ceremony in Long Beach, California on 25th September during APEX EXPO, a conference attended by more than 4,000 airline industry professionals which showcases airline related technologies, products and services. 

SriLankan recently won a host of accolades including ‘World's Leading Airline Operating to the Indian Ocean Region’ at the World Travel Awards; ‘Best Full Service Airline in Central and South Asia’ for two consecutive years at the Future Travel Experience Asia Awards; ‘Most Innovative Marketing Airline in China’ by Life Weekly magazine; ‘Best Airline in South Asia’ at the Top Travel Awards, also in China; and Best International Airline – Asia for two consecutive years at the Tamil Nadu Tourism Awards.

Malik Samarawickrama, Minister of Development Strategies & International Trade, presented the award to SriLankan Airlines Group Chairman Ajith Dias at the Presidential Export Awards 2016 at a gala ceremony at Colombo’s main international convention centre the BMICH last week. SLC was adjudged the winner as the Highest Value Added Exporter in the Professional Services (Other) category.

The Presidential Export Awards were adjudged by a panel of judges appointed by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board. SLC was rewarded for its contribution of value added exports amounting to USD 45.23 million during the financial year 2016/17, an increase from the USD 42.15 million over the previous year.

SriLankan Airlines climbs to 8th place globally for airline fuel efficiency

Colombo, August 09, 2017:

SriLankan Airlines has climbed to eighth position globally in IATA fuel efficiency ranking amongst 51 airlines in the same business model, following the implementation of a wide range of fuel efficiency and conservation measures over the last 22 months to reduce fuel burn.

The 2016 ranking of airlines by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has placed SriLankan eighth with an efficiency rating of 34.86Ltr/100RTK (liters per 100 revenue ton kilometers). The IATA benchmark for the year 2016 is 35.26Ltr/100RTK. This is a significant improvement over its performance in calendar year 2015 when it ranked 15th with a rating of 36.25Ltr/100RTK.

Fuel Saving Initiative by the Pilots

Due to the efforts and skills of its Pilots, Srilankan Airlines achieved a saving of over US$2.3 million, when comparing the planned Fuel burn-off, against the actual in 22 months from August 2015 to June 2017. Fuel is the largest cost component for any airline, and with increasing fuel prices the actions of our pilots help in reducing our operational costs.  

SriLankan’s fuel saving efforts are driven by a specialized Aviation Fuel Department in the Flight Operations Division, which constantly seeks new and innovative methods to reduce fuel usage whilst maintaining the highest safety standards and monitors the implementation of existing fuel conservation measures. These include many IATA recommended initiatives, Airbus and Industry best practice recommendations, at the planning stage and inflight. Flying on direct routes whenever possible, optimizing flight levels to fly at the most fuel-efficient altitudes, maximum usage of engine reverse thrust when landing, taxi-in with single engine after landing and optimizing the usage of auxiliary power unit, are some of the techniques used during flights. The Aviation Fuel Department provides a fuel report to every Captain on a monthly basis, which gives them a better understanding of their fuel uplifts and savings, for possible improvement.

All other stakeholders such as Inflight, Engineering, Cargo, Product Development, Flight Dispatch and Ground Services have contributed towards these achievements by improving their processes at the planning stage.

Fuel Tankering by Flight Dispatch

In addition to savings from fuel efficiency measures, Srilankan also achieved a saving of US$2.7 million during this same period using a process called “Tankering” by Flight Dispatch, another section attached to Flight Operations.

Fuel Tankering is a method by which airlines reduce their purchasing of fuel at airports where fuel prices are high and instead carry fuel from airports with lower fuel prices. Tankering is extensively used on flights to Maldives, where fuel prices are the highest in the network. This means the fuel load required for the return trip from the Maldives to Colombo will be carried out of Colombo.

Some South Indian destinations, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand are some of the destinations where Tankering is practiced, as fuel prices at these destinations are low, hence additional fuel is brought in, to minimize fuel uplift for the next flight from Colombo, where fuel price is higher.

The extra fuel burn due to the increased weight as a result of extra fuel carried, engine wear are some of the factors that are carefully monitored and considered by Flight Dispatch when Tankering.

Apart from achieving significant savings for the airline, the increase in fuel efficiency also directly enhances environmental conservation, an area in which SriLankan has long been a pioneer in the global air transport industry.

SriLankan currently operates to an online network of 41 destinations, and codeshares with other airlines to a total of 105 cities in 47 countries. As a member of the prestigious oneworld alliance, SriLankan also offers its passengers connectivity to over 1,000 cities in 160 countries that are served by its oneworld partner airlines.

SriLankan Airlines achieves superior level of on-time performance 2017

Aug 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's national carrier, SriLankan Airlines has recorded a consistently superior on-time performance during the first six months of this year, in comparison with its peers.

The latest statistics by the global flight data tracker Flightstats.com ranks Sri Lanka's national carrier as the 5th most punctual among 40 of the world's leading airlines.

SriLankan's flights were on-time 86.49% ahead of the time, far ahead of the average 78.33% achieved by the 40 airlines Flightstats monitors. These include many of the finest carriers in the Middle East, Europe, Far East, Australia, North America, South America and South Asia.Captain Suren Ratwatte, CEO of SriLankan Airlines, said: "We are delighted with the performance of every member of our team at SriLankan, who have raised the bar of professionalism to an extraordinary level in order to achieve such a consistent and long-term success. I feel certain that our passengers, who benefit most from this effort, would be absolutely delighted, as they know that they can count on SriLankan to be on-time, all the time."

SriLankan's consistent performance over the entire first half of 2017 resulted in it being ranked in the top ten of these airlines for four of the last six months, with on-time ratings of 81.52% in January, 85.88% in February, 83.67% in March, 85.21% in April, and 85.36% in May.

The high on-time performance is particularly impressive when taking into account the congestion and stresses that arose during the runway re-surfacing at Colombo's Katunayake airport, which is SriLankan's home base, during January to April 2017.

SriLankan's Ground Handling division, which has a policy of never compromising on the safety, security and global award-winning service levels to its passengers, is the sole provider of services in Colombo.

Its performance has led to consistently favorable comments from its airline customers as well as passengers. SriLankan GH handled approximately 9.5 million passengers on over 57,000 flights of all airlines at BIA during the financial year 2016/17.

SriLankan's efforts are on-time performance are choreographed by a Punctuality Improvement Committee that oversees the performance of its airport passenger service staff, cargo handlers, pilots, aircraft maintenance personnel, flight despatchers, security staff and many others.

It is extremely challenging for any airline to achieve such high levels of punctuality. Many of the elements that effect performance are beyond its control such as weather, air traffic control issues, customs and immigration control formalities, bird strikes, airport congestion, etc. The airline industry defines a flight as being 'on-time' if it arrives or departs within 15 minutes of its scheduled time. Airports and airlines are rated for flights arriving and departing throughout their hub airports and global networks on this basis.

Colombo, July 12, 2017: SriLankan Airlines is pleased announce the launch of new services from today to India’s fourth largest city Hyderabad, the capital of the state of Telangana.  Accordingly, the airline will be offering a four-times-a-week service to Hyderabad, connecting the state’s capital to the world through its global route network.

SriLankan Airlines further strengthens its presence in India

New services to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore

Colombo June 13, 2017: SriLankan Airlines will further strengthen its position as the largest foreign carrier into India with the launch of services to three more cities – Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore – in July 2017, increasing to 14 the number of cities in the vast Indian market. Accordingly services to Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Coimbatore commence on 8th, 12th and 16th July respectively.

SriLankan currently operates 108 flights per week to Chennai, Trichy, Trivandrum, Mumbai, New Delhi, Gaya, Madurai, Varanasi, Kochi, Bangalore and Kolkata.

The Airline is aiming to use Viber Public Chat as a prime medium to communicate exclusive offers to both Indian and Sri Lankan customers.

 Currently, SriLankan operates over 100 flights to eleven Indian destinations; which include Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Trivandrum, Cochin, New Delhi and Mumbai. From July this year, the Airline will be introducing four additional frequencies to its New Delhi and Mumbai services. Next month, SriLankan will also be adding three more vibrant Indian destination to its global route network, which are, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore.

 SriLankan currently provides connectivity to 101 destinations in 48 countries (including codeshare operations) via its Colombo hub.

SriLankan Airlines to establish its presence in Australia

Melbourne joins the Airline’s global route network from October 2017

 

 

Colombo May 28, 2017: SriLankan Airlines, the National Carrier of Sri Lanka and a member of the prestigious oneworld alliance, will be establishing its presence in Australia with daily non-stop services to Melbourne commencing October 29th this year.

Australia is home to one of the largest Sri Lankan expatriate communities, many of whom reside in and around Melbourne, the capital of Australia’s ‘Garden State’, Victoria. This factor, together with the tremendous potential for business travel and Victoria’s growing student population convinced the Airline to plan for the launch of non-stop daily services to Melbourne.

The non-stop services will also facilitate passengers from the Middle East and South Asia seeking onward connectivity via Colombo to/from Australia.

SriLankan Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Captain Suren Ratwatte said “Our presence in Australia cements the long-standing relationship between our two countries. We recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our nations, and the addition of Melbourne signifies our strategy of optimizing the Airline’s network in line with our restructuring. This also means that we have connected another continent to our global route map. On the other hand, given the number of Sri Lankans residing in and around Victoria, we fulfill a long felt need for a direct service. We are proud to welcome all the diverse residents of Victoria who can now enjoy the direct connections when visiting their friends and families throughout our network.”

The Airline will be operating Airbus 330-200 aircraft on the route, offering its passengers modern in-flight comforts complemented with its award winning service and the world renowned Sri Lankan warmth and hospitality.

Our direct services will give us a definite advantage as SriLankan is the only carrier that is able to offer connectivity of this nature at this time. We also offer seamless onward connections beyond Colombo to a range of destinations in the Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East. With the launch of the new services, SriLankan Airlines’ passengers will also have the choice of flying to other Australian cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide as well as Auckland, New Zealand. SriLankan Airlines will continue to explore potential expansion opportunities across its network in order to facilitate the envisaged growth in business.”

Australia’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Bryce Hutchesson said, “We congratulate SriLankan Airlines on the addition of a direct flight to Australia.   Direct air connections between countries stimulate two-way tourism, business, trade and people-to-people exchange which are the core ingredients for a vibrant bilateral relationship.  We are seeing a growing number of Australians looking to travel to Sri Lanka for tourism and business, and to reconnect with family.  And we welcome the growing number of Sri Lankans travelling to Australia for education, business, to explore Australia’s culture and natural wonders, and of course to catch up with family and friends.”

Widely known as “a city for all seasons,” Melbourne offers the travellers a wide variety of historic and natural attractions along with urban cityscapes preserving colonial architecture. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, offers heritage, wildlife as well as adventure sports and surfing hotspots for the adventurous Australian traveller. Over the years, the two countries have shared a mutual passion– cricket, which has inspired fans to travel the distance in support of their respective home teams.

More importantly, Australia accounts for one of the largest Sri Lankan communities living outside Sri Lanka, out of which almost 50 per cent lives in and around Victoria, making Melbourne the convenient terminus for their departures and arrivals.

For the convenience of travellers seeking onward connectivity from its Colombo hub, SriLankan currently connects over 10 Indian points with over 100 flights a week, which includes services to/from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Trivandrum, Tiruchirappalli, Cochin, Mumbai and New Delhi. SriLankan will be adding Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore and Hyderabad to its route network in July this year, further expanding its presence in India.

 The Airline’s Middle Eastern services include over fifty weekly flights to/from nine Middle Eastern destinations, including daily services out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Muscat, Bahrain and Kuwait. The Airline also offers its passengers the option of exploring popular holiday destinations such as Seychelles and Maldives’ Male and Gan Island.

These operations will further complement the existing double daily services offered by SriLankan Airlines between Sri Lanka and Australia via Singapore and Kuala Lumpur with its codeshare partners, Qantas and Malaysia Airlines.
