IND vs SL, 1st T20: India bowl out Lanka for 87, register biggest T20I win

Posted on 20 December 2017 by admin

Cuttack: India registered their biggest win in T20 internationals after winning the first T20 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Wednesday by 93 runs. After posting a satisfactory 180 on board, the hosts tumbled Thisara Perera’s men for 87 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India 180 for 3 (Rahul 61, Dhoni 39*, Pandey 32*) beat Sri Lanka 87 (Chahal 4-23, Pandya 3-29) by 93 runs

Being put to bat first, KL Rahul fired upfront for India despite the early loss of KL Rahul. Shreyas Iyer played a decent cameo before Lanka bounced back by dismissing both the batsmen. The visitors looked like they could keep India quiet, but MS Dhoni and Manish Pandey had other plans. The two fired around the park to steer India to a big first innings total.

In reply, the Lankans also started on a good note but a few couple of wickets were enough to take the game away from them. The batting attack looked toothless and did not pose any sort of threat to the Indian bowlers. Asela Gunaratne walked past one fired down the leg side, and Dhoni completed a fortunate stumping, fumbling the ball onto the stumps. Dasun Shanaka, having looked all at sea against Chahal's googly, holed out off Kuldeep. Chahal then spun his wrong'un past Thisara, and Dhoni completed a more convincing stumping. Kusal, having hacked and slashed ineffectually for 27 balls, finally fell in the 13th over when he miscued a big heave off Kuldeep. Sri Lanka were 70 for 7, and the end was near.

Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 23-4, while Hardik Pandya also scalped 3 wickets for 29 runs. The massive victory – by 93 runs – was India's biggest margin in this format, but they were helped by Sri Lanka. Yuzvendra Chahal – four wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of overs – spun a web around them and they gave him four wickets.

Perera’s men will aim to level the series when they take on the Men in Blue in the 2nd T20I at Indore on Friday.

Yuzvendra Chahal is Man of the Match. "When we started bowling, I was confused. But you need a little luck, I got Tharanga out down leg and it started working form there. I was mixing up the googly and the legspinner, and varying my pace to the left-handers. You need to have variations. We've practiced with wet balls, and the wicket was turning, so we just bowled accordingly. I enjoy Kuldeep's bowling and he enjoys mine. But we had a good total on the board and we can flight the ball and attack the batsmen"
