Steven Smith caps epic 2017 with hundred to deny England 4th Test win

Posted on 30 December 2017 by admin

Australia 327 (David Warner 103, Steve Smith 76, S Marsh 61, Broad 4-51, Anderson 3-61) and 4 for 263 (Steve Smith 102*, David Warner 86) drew with England 491 (Cook 244*, Root 61, Broad 56, Cummins 4-117, Hazlewood 3-95, Lyon 3-109).

The Boxing Day Test started as a dead rubber, and by day five rigor mortis had well and truly set in. David Warner scored the slowest half-century of his Test career and Steven Smith ground out his second-slowest Test hundred as Australia dead-batted their way to a draw that ensured there was no consolation victory for England at the MCG, despite Alastair Cook's monumental bat-carrying effort of 244. But neither will there be an Australian clean sweep.

The day began with Australia on 2 for 103, still trailing by 61 runs. England could reasonably have hoped that a couple of early wickets might

When the captains agreed to call it off, Australia were on 4 for 263. They had eked out 160 runs in almost a full day of Test cricket. Their overall run-rate of 2.42 for the match was Australia's lowest in a home Test for nearly 24 years. At the close of play, Smith was on 102 from 275 deliveries, and he had struck just six fours. Mitchell Marsh was on 29 from 166 deliveries, the kind of innings of which his father, the dour opener Geoff Marsh, would have been proud.

Still, Smith's efforts in salvaging a draw for Australia should not be downplayed. This was his sixth and final Test century of 2017, and he joined Ricky Ponting as the only men in Test history to have scored six hundreds in a calendar year on multiple occasions. His century eventually came up from his 259th delivery; not only was it not his slowest Test hundred, it was not even his slowest this series, for Smith had taken 261 balls at the Gabba.

them a strong victory chance. But on the most docile of pitches it took a batting brain-explosion to break the partnership between Smith and Warner, when Warner inexplicably tried to smash the part-time offspin of Joe Root over the infield. Only one more wicket fell for the entire day's play.

Smith will also finish 2017 as the highest run-getter in Test cricket for the year, with 1305 at 76.76. It is a remarkable individual performance, but this innings again showed how critical Smith is to Australia's results in any given Test. He soaked up any remaining pressure on the final morning and by the time he and Mitchell Marsh had batted right through the middle session, a draw was all but certain.

The session was a much-needed steadier for Australia after England claimed the wickets of Warner and Shaun Marsh shortly before the lunch break to give themselves a sniff of victory. Warner had crawled to the slowest half-century of his Test career, a 161-ball effort that ran completely against type, but he threw his wicket away on 86 when he skied a catch off Root.

Marsh edged behind off Stuart Broad for 4 on the stroke of lunch, falling to a fine catch by Jonny Bairstow moving to his left, to leave Australia only 14 runs in front at the break, with six wickets in hand. It had been a slow-scoring two-and-a-half-hour session for the Australians; the first 14 overs of the day brought only 20 runs as Smith and Warner focused almost exclusively on survival.

And by the close of play their aim had been realised. If the MCG's drop-in pitch was disappointingly bereft of character, it was still only the second draw at the ground in the past 20 Tests. But a little more life to this dead rubber would have appreciated by all concerned.

CSBL Governor says, “Inflation, Interest Rates tipped to fall: Economy trending in right direction

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) last week predicted that the island’s economy would recover in 2018 complemented by a fall in market interest rates in the near term and easing of the inflation rate to a modest range between 4%-6% by the first quarter of 2018.

Addressing a press conference, CBSL Governor, Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy said the significant decline in the yields on government… Continued on page 12

…securities since March 24 this year, the date on which CBSL last hiked policy rates, will eventually be reflected on other market interest rates such as lending and deposit rates in the short term.

“The one-year Treasury yields have declined by 208 basis points from the peak levels in March, correcting some disparity that existed between the policy rates and the yields on government securities. The expected further reduction will positively fuel growth,” the governor said.

On the other hand, Dr. Coomaraswamy whilst noting that inflation will trend downwards, advocated that the only way to transition to a low inflationary environment was to anchor inflation through the implementation of the proposed flexible inflation targeting regime.

According to the governor, although core inflation which the Central Bank has influence over, has been broadly on track, headline inflation has perked up due to wage pressures.

“The Monetary Board is watching a couple of things very carefully such as the wage settlements effected at the beginning of the year and inflation expectations. We hope to influence monetary policy as necessary going forward,” Dr. Coomaraswamy said.

“Even domestically, some of the concerns we had during the beginning of this year such as the sharp broad money growth and private sector credit growth have now moved down to the desired levels,” the governor emphasised.

The Central Bank will unveil its 2018 Roadmap on Wednesday, January 3.

Rugby players of note: How Priyantha Ekanayake rose to reach rugby’s top spot

Priyantha Ekanayake

Priyantha Ekanayake

Priyantha Ekanayake the present CEO of Sri Lanka Rugby, the former St. Anthony’s College, Kandy Sports Club, CH & FC, CR & FC, Sri Lanka forward, and Asian Barbarians, except CH & FC. Priyantha has led all the teams he played in. He can be rated as the best ruggerite produced by St. Anthony’s College, and is the first Antonian to lead a Sri Lanka rugby team and hold the Sri Lanka and Asian rugby Presidency. He has the unique achievement of being the only ruggerite to lead the country at four Rugby Asiads.

He was an outstanding third row forward during his days. He had an excellent record in school with his natural talent. Towering over six feet, Priyantha played rugger, cricket, and basketball and also took part in athletics for the Antonians from 1973 to 1985. His pet sport was basketball at school, and represented the country at the 7th Asian Basketball Championship in Seoul, Korea where he also obtained a Korean Diploma in Basketball Coaching. Later he represented the country at several tournaments. At cricket he was a fine all-rounder, where he shaped up as a good pace bowler but rugby robbed him from cricket.

He started his rugby career under the guidance of the famous Antonian coach late Kalu Perera, who coached him till he left school. As a school boy he played for Kandy Sports Club. From then on there was no stopping Priyantha who represented the Sri Lanka under-25 team and toured Taipei in 1985. From about this time he was an automatic choice for the National team.

After seeing his talents in a Kandy SC – CH & FC game President of CH, Kishin Butani grabbed him for his Club and Got him to play in the R. Premadasa Trophy Championship which CH & FC went on to win. After a short stint at CH & FC, Priyantha was invited by Malik Samarawickrema and he crossed over to CR & FC in 1987 and played for them till 1991 and led the side in 1990.

In 1992 Priyantha and a few players from CR & FC, most of them products of Kandy schools crossed over to Kandy, after a dispute and helped Kandy Sports Club to win their first ever trophy in rugby after 42 years of club rugby.

It was Priyantha, who motivated the Nittawela boys to do great things.During his days he tackled like a wrecking ball and ran like a charging bull, but it's his pain threshold that really marks him out.

He led the Nittawela club in 1993 to win the Clifford Cup. From the year 1985 to 1997 Priyantha was a regular member of the Sri Lanka team and had the privilege of leading the country at four Asiads – a record.

He also had a stint in New Zealand where he played for Ravense Bourne Sports Club in the Premier League and also played in Wales for Ebb Bale Province.

In 1997 he made Kandy and the country proud by leading the Asian Barbarians invitation team. The Barbarians comprised players from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The other players who were selected were Thushara Jayalath of Havelocks SC and Asoka Jayasena of Kandy SC.

Priyantha became the first Sri Lankan to lead the Asian Babarians. In the first game against Hong Kong Under 24, which had top class players. Priyantha leading from the front was able to beat them 46 points to 35. Then in the main game, they met the Hong Kong Dragons where again the Barbarians won 26 points to nil.

A warrior who played the game without fear looked his opponents in the eye and never took a step backward no matter what was unfolding in front of him. He was considered as one of the finest players of his generation.

He gave his best for rugby and ended up as the President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union and Asian Rugby Football Union along with Dilroy Fernando.

Today he is the CEO and doing a good job with the support of the rest at Sri Lanka Rugby Officials. Priyantha treats every club in the same manner and gives the best for the game.

He coached Kandy Sports Club when Harris Omar led the team, and helped the club to win the inter club sevens for the first time in 1999. Priyantha’s brother L.V ‘Lakshman’ Ekanayake was another outstanding sportsman produced by the Antonians, he too went on to represent Sri Lanka in Rugby.

Tatas exit Sri Lanka tea business after 25 years

Tea industry Picture for representational purpose

After establishing a strong foothold in the tea industry of Sri Lanka over the past 25 years, the Tatas are exiting the business as part of the group’s ongoing strategy to review its global businesses and alliances under its new chairman N Chandrasekaran.

Tata Global Beverages has divested its full 31.85% stake in the three-way joint venture Estate Management Services Pvt Ltd (EMSPL) to the founding partner Sunshine Holdings Plc for Rs 120 crore, the company told stock exchanges.

EMSPL is the holding company that managed Sri Lankan tea business consisting tea estates and brands. It manages one of the largest plantation properties of Sri Lanka and holds 53.75% shareholding in Colombo Stock Exchange-listed Watawala Plantations PLC and has a 100% shareholding in Watawala Tea Ceylon Ltd, a marketing company owning brands like Zesta, Watawala and Ran Kahata which together command over 30% market share of the branded tea market in Sri Lanka.

Watawala also manages over 12,000 hectares of tea, rubber and palm oil plantations in the island nation. These three crops account for two-thirds of the company’s plantations, with the balance comprising timber and spices.

Sunshine Holdings would now be holding 60% stake in EMSPL with the rest with the third partner Pyramid Wilmar Plantations Pvt Ltd, a joint venture of Asia’s leading agribusiness group Wilmar International, Watawala Plantations PLC has told Colombo Stock Exchange.

2017 has been a year of divestments for Tata Global Beverages, which earlier exited its faltering overseas ventures in Russia and China to cut losses amid bleak revival scenario.

In Russia, it sold off its popular coffee brand that it had acquired in 2012. It has also disposed of its 90% stake in Zheijiang Tata Tea Extraction Co to its joint venture partner Zheijiang Tea Group.

The process of review of its weak global businesses started during the tenure of Cyrus Mistry, and under the current chairmanship of Chandrasekaran, the strategy to exit the businesses is now being executed.

The sale of Sri Lankan business comes at a time when that country’s tea industry is witnessing falling crop and exports which started since the middle of 2015 due to continued adverse weather including drought condition of 2016.

Tea exports in January–November period dropped to 265 million kilogram (kg), its lowest since the year 2000 and even lower than the poor shipment of 266 million kg last year when production was severely impacted by drought.

Ind vs SL, 3rd T20: India win by 5 wickets, complete 3-0 series whitewash

Posted on 24 December 2017 by admin

Mumbai: India ended the 3-match T20 series on Sunday with a 3-0 whitewash as they outplayed Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the 3rd T20 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India defeated Sri Lanka by 5 wickets to clean sweep the T20 series 3-0 in the final game in Mumbai. Follow highlights of India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd T20 here.

ndia 139 for 5 (Pandey 32, Chameera 2-22, Shanaka 2-27) beat Sri Lanka135 for 7 (Gunaratne 36, Unadkat 2-15, Pandya 2-25) by five wickets

Being put to bat first, Lanka once again had a lacklustre start. The Indian bowlers stocked the pressure with 3 quick wickets before Samarawickrama and Gunaratne steadied the innings. However, the Men in  Blue once again gathered momentum picking up wickets at regular intervals.

Gunaratne was the top scorer after a steady cameo but India’s chase was made difficult after they leaked 18 runs in the final over through Mohammed Siraj. Among the wickets were Jaydev Unadkat and Hardik Pandya who claimed 2 wickets each, while Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar picked one each.

In reply, India did not get the fanciest of starts as fans would have expected. KL Rahul was the first to be dismissed followed by Rohit Sharma, that put the hosts in a spot of bother. With the inexperienced Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer at the crease, Perera’s men shifted the momentum towards their sides with some tight overs, that saw the run-rate creeping up.

With the pressure soon building, the Lankan pace duo of Dushmanta Chameera and Dasun Shanaka shone as India soon went down to 5 wickets down to five wickets. But the pressure didn’t take a toll on Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni as they safely guided India over the line. An overall strong performance from the Indian team helped them beat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in the 3rd and final T20 to sweep the series 3-0. Indian bowlers did brilliantly to restrict Sri Lanka to 135/7 in 20 overs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After India won the toss and opted to field, Jaydev Unadkat and debutant Washington Sundar bowled beautifully to put the visitors on the backfoot. Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya also stemmed the run flow and picked up wickets. In reply, the hosts required 19.2 overs to win the match with Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer being the top-scorers. MS Dhoni and Dinesh eventually guided the team over the line.

Winning Rohit Sharma says: We always knew that whatever target is set up, we back our batsmen to get it. Happy with the composition we had throughout the series. Guys who got opportunities made it count throughout. Thoroughly a team effort. Each and every guy has put in a lot of effort. Lot of the guys you see were playing their first game, second game, but it never seemed that way. They were confident and it was our job as management to back them. They came and did what they were expected to do. Looking very much forward to South Africa. Would like to reiterate the home season we’ve had. Never easy, no matter what conditions you play in. There were few hiccups in the middle. Games like Dharamsala which taught us a lot.

2nd T20: India makes it two in a row with Rohit Sharma leading from the front

Posted on 22 December 2017 by admin

Rohit Sharma headlined a match that saw 31 sixes and a slew of records being broken, battering a 35-ball century, the joint-fastest in T20Is, in a ground whose short boundaries were purportedly the reason why Thisara Perera had decided to put India in for the second game in a row. While Sri Lanka did manage to score at nearly 10 an over, they failed to last 20 overs again, this time in a steeper chase of 260, eventually losing by 88 runs.

India 260 for 5 (Rohit Sharma 118, Rahul 89, Thisara Perera 2-49) beat v Sri Lanka 172 (Kusal Perera 77, Upul Tharanga 47, Chahal 4-52, Kuldeep 3-52) by 88 runs.

Rohit had smiled sheepishly at Thisara after the visiting captain had called correctly again. But the smiles were of a different kind after he walked out to a quick wicket, where Angelo Mathews welcomed him with sub-115kph short balls. The Indian captain used that start to transcend into a state of demolition, with shots we're accustomed to seeing when he's been around for more than half an ODI innings. On Friday night, he didn't need anywhere near that much time.

While KL Rahul brought the allure early on, Rohit had the better strike-rate, swatting the short balls away with characteristic disdain, before resorting to caressing length balls over his favoured midwicket region. He even took 15 runs off his first five balls against Akila Dananjaya's legspin, the form of bowling that was routinely talked about as his weakness in the IPL earlier this year.

By the end of the ninth over, Sri Lanka had used seven bowlers, a number that indicated they had enough options to warrant bringing in an extra batsman, but one which, on the flip side, glaringly exposed their decision to drop a specialist in Vishwa Fernando. Four men apart from the new-ball bowlers had gone for at least 16 in their first over. Asela Gunaratane went for 21 in his opening over, which started with Rohit slapping a loopy one over midwicket to reach his fifty in 23 balls, before sending the next ball over midwicket for a big six to bring up the century opening stand.

Off his next 11 balls, only three failed to breach the boundary. The most delightful of them came at the end of the streak, a slap on the up over cover which brought up his hundred, and the two sixes off the balls before, carved on either side of sweeper cover. It was the earliest century scored in a T20I innings, coming in the 12th over.

With that much time remaining, thoughts of another double-hundred in limited-overs cricket had begun but Dushmantha Chameera bowled the most effective change up of Sri Lanka's innings, a short slower ball that Rohit couldn't ramp over third man. As he walked off, he responded to a question from Ravi Shastri in the dressing room, cupping his hands like a wicketkeeper to signal he wanted MS Dhoni in at No. 3.

At the other end, Rahul played watchfully, visibly bothered by horizontal-bat shots, several of which he under-edged into the turf as Sri Lanka resorted to slower balls early in the innings. He would've fallen to one too, but Sadeera Samarawickrama dropped him at point on 6.

He switched tactics and decided to go straight, which resulted immediately in the shot of the evening. He walked at a 140kph delivery from Chameera that was prime for a cut – short and a tad wide. Except, his hands came from under the ball rather than above it, and he punched it over the long-off boundary, all the way into the top-tier. He then launched a Nuwan Pradeep slower ball straight over the bowler's head for six, having just tickled a slower ball past short fine leg off his hips.

In fact, he didn't bring out the pull till Rohit was dismissed, following which he dominated a 78-run stand with Dhoni. He was given another reprieve on 83, when Gunaratne, who had lined up under a flick at deep square, seemed to completely miss it as it approached him, letting it sail over his head. But Pradeep had his man the very next ball, inducing a thick outside edge that was taken by Niroshan Dickwella with a leap to his right. India lost four wickets in the last ten balls, but finished with the second-highest total in T20I cricket.

The indignity of conceding 260 notwithstanding, Sri Lanka did make good of their prophecy that this was a chasing ground. Dickwella tried a series of scoops, including one off the first ball of the innings in his 25 off 19 balls. He didn't make full use of his chance – Rahul returned Sri Lanka's favours with a drop of his own – though and was dismissed in the fifth over.

Kusal Perera lasted the longest of all Sri Lankan batsmen in the last game, but was the most troubled of them. He turned that around dramatically in Indore, muscling several deliveries over the wide mid-on boundary. He took a liking to Yuzvendra Chahal in particular, using his reach to cart the bowler into the leg side despite being beaten in flight several times. Kuldeep Yadav wasn't spared either, despite taking the ball away from the left hander.

Kusal's blitz somewhat made up for Upul Tharanga's early struggles, but the opener soon got into the act, as they added 109 for the second wicket at more than 12 an over to leave their side with an outside chance. But it took one wicket – Tharanga top-edged a hoick off Chahal – to set a collapse in motion. The next over, Kuldeep's last, saw three wickets, starting with the promoted Thisara top-edging one to Hardik Pandya's right at long-on off his first ball. Kusal then skewed one to long-off, and Gunaratne missed a googly to be stumped.

Chahal then picked up three wickets in the next over to finish with four. With Mathews absent hurt – and out of the series according to Thisara – Sri Lanka folded from 145 for 1 to 172 all out in 25 balls.

IND vs SL, 1st T20: India bowl out Lanka for 87, register biggest T20I win

Posted on 20 December 2017 by admin

Cuttack: India registered their biggest win in T20 internationals after winning the first T20 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Wednesday by 93 runs. After posting a satisfactory 180 on board, the hosts tumbled Thisara Perera’s men for 87 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India 180 for 3 (Rahul 61, Dhoni 39*, Pandey 32*) beat Sri Lanka 87 (Chahal 4-23, Pandya 3-29) by 93 runs

Being put to bat first, KL Rahul fired upfront for India despite the early loss of KL Rahul. Shreyas Iyer played a decent cameo before Lanka bounced back by dismissing both the batsmen. The visitors looked like they could keep India quiet, but MS Dhoni and Manish Pandey had other plans. The two fired around the park to steer India to a big first innings total.

In reply, the Lankans also started on a good note but a few couple of wickets were enough to take the game away from them. The batting attack looked toothless and did not pose any sort of threat to the Indian bowlers. Asela Gunaratne walked past one fired down the leg side, and Dhoni completed a fortunate stumping, fumbling the ball onto the stumps. Dasun Shanaka, having looked all at sea against Chahal's googly, holed out off Kuldeep. Chahal then spun his wrong'un past Thisara, and Dhoni completed a more convincing stumping. Kusal, having hacked and slashed ineffectually for 27 balls, finally fell in the 13th over when he miscued a big heave off Kuldeep. Sri Lanka were 70 for 7, and the end was near.

Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 23-4, while Hardik Pandya also scalped 3 wickets for 29 runs. The massive victory – by 93 runs – was India's biggest margin in this format, but they were helped by Sri Lanka. Yuzvendra Chahal – four wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of overs – spun a web around them and they gave him four wickets.

Perera’s men will aim to level the series when they take on the Men in Blue in the 2nd T20I at Indore on Friday.

Yuzvendra Chahal is Man of the Match. "When we started bowling, I was confused. But you need a little luck, I got Tharanga out down leg and it started working form there. I was mixing up the googly and the legspinner, and varying my pace to the left-handers. You need to have variations. We've practiced with wet balls, and the wicket was turning, so we just bowled accordingly. I enjoy Kuldeep's bowling and he enjoys mine. But we had a good total on the board and we can flight the ball and attack the batsmen"
