Sam “The Man” – we never forget!

Posted on 20 July 2017 by admin

Colombo – 1957,a boy who had just left school was asked to play the Saxophone for Leonard Franke’s band “The Manhattans.” He never looked back. Music was to become his life for the next sixty years. It took him from the Royal Albert Hall in London to the United States, Salzburg-Austria, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Zambia, The Middle-East, India, Pakistan and Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The importance of being Nihal Samarasinghe, popularly known as ‘Sam the Man,’is more than being an “icon of the Sri Lanka English popular music scene.”A man like Sam had to be around for sixty years in post-independent Sri Lanka, to lead us confidently in singing the songs of the dominant global culture. As a nation, competing in international arenas with our own dialect of Sri Lankan English, with its own Sri Lankan English linguistic diction, he had to be there.

Men like Sam were the pioneer builders of that popular self-confidence of Sri Lanka as an English speaking nation, singing the popular songs of the English speaking world, anywhere in the world. He earned the accolade ‘King’ of the Sing Along, having introduced the first Sing Along Concert in Sri Lanka in 1997, together with the Y’s men of Sri Lanka.

Sixty years after he left S.Thomas’ for a career in music, he was laid to rest on Sunday, July 16 2017. His old school in Mount Lavinia in a rare gesture of condolence lowered the school flag to half-mast. It was perhaps the first time that S.Thomas’ College had honoured an old boy for his music, in this manner. When he was taken away from his home at 50 Hotel Road, Mount Lavina after a simple Buddhist ceremony, college prefects sang the college song before his casket, and carried him away.

He played his Saxophone and sang his songs in his eightieth year in life. That was the beauty of his existence. He leaves behind powerful memories of how he gave brave and beautiful expression to his songs. Those who performed with him with “The Jetliners” in the 1960’s and later with his own “Sam the Man and his Gaylord’s” have said of Sam, “music had an unexplainable fascination for Sam, the chords coloured his life” describing him as “a man with an inimitable style of performing.”

His music of the night which reverberated from the sanctums of the Old Thomians’ Swimming Club, leaves behind the echoes of the “ Tennessee Waltz,” “Beyond the Reef,” “Stranger on the Shore,” “My Way,” “It’s only a paper Moon,” “Marie the Dawn is Breaking” to the moments of sunset at the Terrace of the Mount Lavinia Hotel with “Red sails in the Sunset,” “South of the Border,” “I’ll take you home again Kathleen” or the evenings at the Harbour Room of the Grand Oriental Hotel in Fort with “He’ll have to go,” “Moonlight and Roses,” “Banks of the Ohio,” to “Darling how can you forget so soon.”

This was his flamboyant life style for six decades. Sam the Man with his Saxophone and his songs which brought happiness and left memories of great moments to hundreds in Sri Lanka and overseas, as one of Sri Lanka’s true international entertainers.

There was also a routine disciplined lifestyle of “Sam the Man” in Mount Lavinia. He derived his strength from the simplicity of his life style which enabled him to sing along to his eightieth year. On Sunday mornings he used to walk to the Sunday fair at the Mount Lavinia junction looking for herbs, a fascinating “organic” collection that turns up at the stalls of small vendors, to make his nectar for healthy living. Then three or four times a week he used to walk to the S.Thomas’Swimming Pool, for the swims he used to relish.

Away from the glamour of the lights of the many evenings of his life, he knew how to live his life in relaxed comfort. Of course Sam and his wife Felicia were bestowed with a home in one of the few remaining gardens on Hotel Road. Their son Nuwan is pursuing his own career in computer engineering, and his own interest in music in the United States.

It was in that tiny world of the men’s changing room of the S.Thomas’swimming pool that he used to hold sway. His conversation with a few of us, the regulars who hardly knew much about music, turned into a fascinating exercise. He enlightened us from the history of Jazz and its New Orleans days, to popular English country music, and the issues in creating good taste in western music and song, in Sri Lanka.

He was trying to tell us we have never belonged outside the global home; we all cannot but share with others across the world. They were contained in the iconic nature of some of those songs of the international popular English music scene, he sang for us in Sri Lanka.

In the evening of his life “Sam the Man,” “the icon of our club” left with us a picture of a man who has led a meaningful, productive and disciplined life in the Sri Lanka popular English music scene.

SriLankan Airlines global network expands to highest number of destinations

Posted on 19 July 2017 by admin

Colombo, July 19, 2017: SriLankan Airlines recorded an exciting milestone last Sunday as it launched a new four-times-a-week service to Coimbatore. This took SriLankan’s online destination count to 41, the highest ever in Sri Lanka’s aviation history.

With the recently launched routes to Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, as well as the seasonal flights to Gaya and Varanasi which will resume in August, SriLankan will soon be operating 126 scheduled flights a week to 14 destinations in India – serving more Indian points than any other international airline. This regains SriLankan the title of the foreign airline with the largest reach into India – a solid and distinct advantage that will help SriLankan’s commercial efforts and its quest to become a regional carrier of note.

In addition to opening these new routes, SriLankan has also implemented several other network changes from 15th July in line with its strategy of adapting its route network to align with the current market realities. These include;

  • New daily non-stop flights to Guangzhou, China (eliminating the previous Bangkok stopover)
  • New five times a week non-stop flights to Hong Kong, China (eliminating the previous Bangkok stopover that had operated for decades)
  • Flights to Bangkok, Thailand increased from daily to three times a day, to cater to the demand and to enhance network connectivity
  • Flights to Delhi, India increased from daily to 11 times a week

SriLankan’s destination count is set to increase further from the upcoming winter season, as it launches new daily non-stop flights to Melbourne, Australia. This represents SriLankan’s re-entry to Australia after a hiatus of sixteen years. The airline has already seen very strong forward bookings on this route – which gives confidence that it is the right choice. Further expansion of services on strategically important routes are also planned for the winter season.

Two new A320neo aircraft and the first A321neo aircraft have joined SriLankan’s fleet during the year, with two more A321neo aircraft due to join before the end of the year. It is worth noting that SriLankan was the first airline in Asia, and only the fourth airline worldwide, to take delivery of the A321neo aircraft. The A320neo family aircraft incorporate the latest technologies including new generation CFM-LEAP engines and “sharklet”, wingtips both of which enhance fuel efficiency while delivering superior levels of comfort to passengers. They are 15% more fuel efficient than the previous generation A320 family aircraft and deliver almost a 50% reduction in noise footprint.

SriLankan completed the recently ended Financial Year 2016/17 with an improved financial performance and a reduction of its Unit Cost. Since the beginning of the new FY 2017/18, SriLankan has recorded a reversal of the declining yields that it had witnessed in the prior year, all signs pointing that SriLankan is heading in the right direction.

Dr Cyril Ernest and wife Indrani were chief guests at the Benedictine Prize Giving

At the invitation of Rev. Bro. Henry Dissanayake, Director of St. Benedict's College, top all-round sportsman and former Ceylon cricketer Dr. Cyril Ernest, now domiciled in the USA will be the chief guest of the St. Benedict's College Prize Giving 2017 on Friday July 7 at the College premises.

Dr. Ernest represented St. Benedict's College with distinction in cricket, hockey, athletics and tennis in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was an excellent all-rounder in cricket opening batting with Ranjit Fernando, always giving a good start to the Benedictines. He was a brilliant fielder at close leg position, at a time when helmets and other safety gear were unheard of. He was also a very useful off spin bowler. He represented the College in Combined Schools' cricket teams of that time. He also took part in Public Schools Athletic Meets and Public Schools Tennis Championships.

Dr. Ernest entered Medical College from St. Benedict's in 1961 and had a dream sporting career at the University of Ceylon. He represented the University in Sara Trophy cricket as an all-rounder from 1961-67 and captained the team in his final year. He captained the University cricket team on tour to the All-India Inter-University cricket tournament, 1966, Bangalore, India. He represented the University hockey team in the Pioneer and Andriesz Shield tournaments.

After joining Royal Ceylon Air Force as a medical doctor, he captained the Air Force cricket team, the Adastrians and also played hockey. He was a regular member of the Ceylon Government Services cricket team in the Robert Senanayake Pentangular tournament, which became the national champions in 1969. He also toured India with the Government Services side. He played for the Government Services cricket team in their fixture against Joe Lister's International team in 1969. He first played for the Ceylon national team against the MCC in 1969. He also represented the Ceylon Cricket Association team in the annual Gopalan Trophy encounter versus Madras. He was selected for the Ceylon team to tour Pakistan in 1971, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the Bangladesh problem.

In the USA, he played for the USA cricket team in the Associate Members World Cup in Birmingham, England 1982. He was manager of the USA cricket team 1995-96 and was chairman of the selection committee 1995-96. Dr. Ernest therefore has the rare distinction of playing for the national cricket teams of two countries, his homeland Sri Lanka, then Ceylon and USA.

Dr.Ernest was a keen long distance runner, running four marathons (Honolulu twice 1985-1986, Los Angeles 1987 and Beijing 1995) and numerous 5k and 10k races. He is also a Black Belt in Taekwondo/Karate.

He achieved all these sporting accomplishments, while being a top consultant physician and cardiologist and a medical administrator. He specialised in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He is a Fellow American College of Cardiology (FACC)-1985, Fellow American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP)-1985 and Fellow American College of Physicians (FCAP)-1990. He held the position of president Los Angeles County Medical Association 1984 and from 1982 to 1986, served in the Los Angeles County Medical Association Board of Governors.

The Annual Prize Giving at St. Benedict’s College is the most important event in the school calendar and Bro. Director Henry Dissanayake has rightly invited a person of rare calibre Dr.Cyril Ernest and his wife Indrani as chief guests for this event. Dr Ernest’s daughters Cheryl and Melanie will also join their parents at this memorable occasion.

Bro. Henry Dissanayake will definitely hold Dr. Ernest as a role model for young Benedictines to follow and Dr. Ernest would most likely share his experiences, some words of wisdom and plenty of advice to the young hopefuls. He has been a great benefactor of the College and has supported many infrastructure development projects and helped SBC at cricket and athletics. In fact, the Bowling Machine presently used by the Benedictine cricketers was donated by him.

Sri Lanka’s Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal promises to play fearless cricket

Former great Aravinda de Silva always speaks of trusting your instincts and playing an aggressive brand of cricket that often upsets the rhythm of the opposition. As Sri Lanka completed a stunning four wicket win chasing down a mammoth 388 run target to keep their unbeaten record against Zimbabwe intact, new captain Dinesh Chandimal echoed similar sentiments.

Dinesh Chandimal

"We’ve played on these kinds of pitches before in Sri Lanka, in India and Bangladesh. On these pitches, it’s with sweeps and reverse sweeps that we can score runs. There’s a risk in that, but if we are chasing scores, we should trust our instincts and play those shots. At training we had practiced those things, and those things bore results today," noted Chandimal.

"When it came time for us to bat yesterday, most of what we talked about was playing your own game as batsmen. We know that it was tough for us to bat out the time and draw the match. If we tried that, it was likely we’d lose. So we said: play your own game. As a captain I told them that I’d take the responsibility for any mistakes, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Kusal Mendis, Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga played well. Then at the end, Asela and Dickwella were excellent," noted Chandimal.

"Zimbabwe put huge effort into winning this match, and it wasn’t easy for us. In a Test match you can’t make mistakes across the five days. At times we made mistakes, and at other times we did well. That changed from session to session. We wanted to win the game. We are very happy with the result."

Asela Gunaratne kept his nerve to remain till the end as he finished unbeaten on 80. "I am very glad a player like Asela is in the team. He’s a cushion for any captain or team. If he bowls, he gets the wickets the team needs. I’m very happy he’s in the team. He has performed his responsibilities well. I’m hoping for those things from him in the future as well."

"I gave responsibilities to all the players – whether they were juniors or seniors. Everyone can have good ideas, so even in the team meetings, we gave them that room to talk. We have a good start now. We saw the character of the team – how they picked themselves up. We have that mentality to achieve victory even when things look grim. My main goal is to win every game."

Sri Lanka chase record total to beat Zimbabwe by four wickets in one-off Test

Posted on 18 July 2017 by admin

Sri Lanka chase record total to beat Zimbabwe by four wickets in one-off Test.

After losing ODI series, Sri Lanka restore some pride as they chase down record 388-run target to beat Zimbabwe by four wickets in one-off Test. Rangana Herath was star of the match for his 11-wicket haul; Dickwella and Gunaratne hit solid fifties in the chase.

Set a record 388-run target for win, Sri Lanka remained calm under pressure to beat Zimbabwe by four wickets in the one-off Test in Colombo on Tuesday. Dickwella and Gunaratne, after the hosts lost two early on the final day, had a brilliant stand which put the chase on track and left very little for the batsmen to follow. Dickwella fell short of a well-deserved hundred but Gunaratne stayed there right till the end and saw his side through. For Zimbabwe, Cremer was pick of the bowlers for his four wickets but the leggie didn’t get enough support from the other end. 382 was the previous best chase in Sri Lanka in a Test match, and it was clearly a very special effort with the bat by the hosts. The ODI series loss did deflate them and this is the kind of result they would have wanted ahead of an important home series against India. It begins in little over a week and the hosts seem well-tuned for Virat Kohli and Co. Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe, One off Test, Day 5: As it happened in Colombo.

PREVIEW SL vs ZIM, DAY 5: Zimbabwe were seven wickets away from their maiden Test win over Sri Lanka on Monday after setting the hosts a target of 388 in their one-off match at the R Premadasa Stadium. Sri Lanka were 170-3 in their second innings at stumps on the fourth day, still needing another 218 to beat Zimbabwe, who also recently won their maiden ODI series against the hosts. Kusal Mendis was unbeaten on 60 with Angelo Mathews, who stepped down as captain after the ODI series defeat, on 17 not out. Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer picked up 2-67 in Sri Lanka's second innings to add to his five-wicket haul in the first innings. Earlier, Sikandar Raza's first Test century helped Zimbabwe to 377 in their second innings after the touring side had resumed the fourth day on 252/6.

Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)

So that is it from us for this game! Sri Lanka win a pulsating Test match and avoid embarrassment by chasing down a mammoth total. Zimbabwe showed great character to take it down to the last day. The batting performance will give the Lankans great confidence heading into the Test series against India. The action will begin between the two Asian sides on 26th July. Zimbabwe on the other hand will head back home and work on their skills as they are not playing cricket for quite a while. Till then, take care and cheers!

Sri Lanka skipper, Dinesh Chandimal says that it has been a really good Test match. Credits his players as they have worked really hard. Mentions that it is tough to bat on day 5 and adds that the batsmen needed to apply themselves. Feels happy that the batsmen did just that. Gives a special mention to Gunaratne and Dickwella for batting so well. States that as a captain you have to be responsible on and off the field. Declares that it is a tough challenge for them against India but he is confident of a good show from his boys.

Zimbabwe skipper, Graeme Cremer says it is a little disappointing. Credits Sri Lanka for chasing a big target on day 5. Appreciates Rangana Herath for picking wickets at regular intervals. Mentions he is proud of his boys for fighting it out and taking it to the last day. Admits the one day series was a high point for them and it gave them belief they can play well in the tests. Ends by saying they have had a very good time in Sri Lanka and hope they come back soon to play another series.

Man of the Series, Rangana Herath says that he's aware that he has bowled more than 23,000 balls in First Class cricket. Mentions that he enjoys playing cricket and wants to bowl more in future. States that it is good to go past the records of Marshal and Botham in all time bowling list. Opines that it was a good game. Feels that Raza was playing a lot of sweeps and reverse sweeps and made it difficult for them. Adds that it was a challenge and they took it. Ends by saying that he is looking forward to the big series against India.

Man of the Match, Asela Gunaratne says he is extremely happy for what he has done. Thanks the team and the support staff for their support. Ends by saying that he is very happy that the team won.

Zimbabwe in both the innings were rescued by the lower order batters. That's a big positive for them. Sri Lanka have to be credited for achieving a come-from-behind victory, especially after conceding the psychological advantage at the end of the first innings by trailing Zimbabwe by 10 runs. The batters' efforts in the second innings had to be lauded as they didn't crumble under the pressure of a mountain of runs required.

The Zimbabweans can take heart from the fact that even though they were the lesser ranked side among the two, they were the side that was on top for most part of the game. Graeme Cremer, the skipper, was brilliant with the ball, claiming 9 wickets in the match. He was really probing the Sri Lankan batsmen with his guile. There were some half chances and some missed opportunities that, if grabbed, could have resulted in the match having a different end. All in all, this match proved to be yet another reason as to why Test cricket is alive and kicking.

So! It all comes to an end in the way it actually should have! Sri Lanka win and what an innings to finish it off by Asela Gunaratne. He kept his calm and played his shots and also cleverly rotated the strike to see off the tense moments in the last two sessions, ably supported in that last unbeaten 67-run stand, by Dilruwan Perera. Let's not forget the important innings that Niroshan Dickwella played, which acted as a catalyst for the run chase. Dinesh Chandimal, the new Sri Lankan skipper is elated with this victory and why not. This was the fifth highest successful chase in Tests.
