Chris Ballard Ontario’s New Minister of the Environment and Climate Change

Posted on 31 July 2017 by admin

News Release.

July 31, 2017.

Peter Milczyn Promoted to Cabinet as Minister of Housing.

Minister Chris Ballard

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced changes today to her cabinet, following the resignation of Glen Murray as Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

Chris Ballard moves from Minister of Housing and Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy to become the new Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, leading Ontario's fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and overseeing the province's transition to a low-carbon economy.

Peter Milczyn, MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, is promoted to cabinet, appointed as the new Minister of Housing. He will also take over as Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy. In these roles, Milczyn will oversee and build on Ontario's Fair Housing Plan, making sure that people across Ontario are able to find a safe, affordable home. He will also work alongside Helena Jaczek, Minister of Community and Social Services, on implementing Ontario's Basic Income Pilot and supporting people in Ontario to get ahead, find income security and break the cycle of poverty, particularly for children and youth.

In addition, the Office of Francophone Affairs for Ontario will become a standalone ministry, reflecting the importance of Ontario's Francophone population to the province's economic prosperity and its diverse, vibrant cultural fabric. Marie-France Lalonde will continue in her role as Minister of Francophone Affairs and Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Glen Murray will remain as MPP for Toronto Centre.

The changes announced today maintain the size of Ontario's cabinet at 29 ministers. A swearing-in ceremony was held at Queen's Park this morning.

The Coconut Tree exporting SL culture to Cheltenham, UK

Posted on 31 July 2017 by admin

Fascinating story behind Sri Lankan restaurant ranked no.1 on Trip Advisor in Cheltenham.

The Coconut Tree is a popular Sri Lankan restaurant in Cheltenham which is rated 5 stars by Trip Advisor. It’s known for its freshly made, authentic cuisine and friendly staff. But what is exactly is the story behind the restaurant? How did it come to be? In December 2016, five young Sri Lankans opened The Coconut Tree.

The friends met at school aged 11, near their home in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Parveen Thangiah, the chef, was the first to move to the UK in 2004 with the rest of his family to live in Croydon, because he wanted to be closer to their family that already lived in the area.

Rashinthe Rodrigo, the General Manager of the Coconut Tree, chose to join the chef in 2006 after being given the choice to continue studies in Australia or the UK. In 2008, Danushka Fernando and Tiranjan Fernando moved to the UK and the four began to share a house in Croydon whilst they completed their studies.

Mithra Fernando joined the crew in 2015, and living in Cheltenham, he offered Rashinthe a job in accountancy which led the boys to all move to Cheltenham together. In 2016, the crew had to move out from their flat together and came across the flat above St. Pauls Tavern, combined with the rental of the pub. With the cheap rent and motivation to get out of the 9-5 box, they began planning for The Coconut Tree. Their original idea was a small Sri Lankan inspired tapas bar, so students could have a trendy place to eat and drink. They moved in to the building in May 2016, and spent six months renovating the bar and flat by themselves, as an evening project after work. The team worked together from day one as they designed the interior by themselves, taking on their own tasks such as Tiranjan doing the tiling, and Rashinthe painting the walls. Parveen, a born feeder, kept supplying the team with food as they worked, which lead to the inspiration behind the menu.

After six months of opening, the team became no.1 on Trip Advisor in the local area. Due to their success, they have plans to expand to Bristol, to continue their journey of introducing people to the Sri Lankan culture.

They want to take the same concept to give people more opportunities, and supply their unique food and cocktails to new people.

Rashinthe Rodrigo said: “One thing you can expect from us is good hospitality, culture and a smile. We want to bring our culture to Cheltenham.”

Goods-producing industries rose 1.6 per cent, driven by a 4.6 per cent increase in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector.

The oil and gas extraction subsector grew 7.6 per cent, with non-conventional oil extraction rising 13 per cent due to a rebound in activity after a fire at the Syncrude Mildred Lake upgrader in mid-March that curtailed production.

Conventional oil and gas extraction gained 3.2 per cent.

Service-producing industries increased 0.2 per cent, led by finance and insurance services.

Ontario Increasing Access to Life-Saving Stem Cell Transplants

Posted on 27 July 2017 by admin

A News Release has been issued indicating that the Government of Ontario is increasing access to Life-Saving Stem Cell Transplants.

Quick facts:

  • A stem cell transplant is a procedure that replaces abnormal cells in patients whose normal cells have been affected by lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma and other cancers and disorders affecting the blood.
  • There are three types of stem cell transplants: those where the cells come from the patient (autologous), those where the cells are taken from a related donor (allogeneic related) and those provided by an unrelated donor (allogenic unrelated).
  • Six hospitals provide stem cell transplant services in Ontario: Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Hamilton Health Sciences Centre, Kingston General Hospital, Health Sciences North, London Health Sciences Centre, and the Ottawa Hospital.
  • The Stem Cell Transplant Consultation Group includes clinical experts, hospital leaders and patient and family representatives. They provide advice to improve capacity and patient access for stem cell transplants.
  • Ontario is providing a one-time funding to both hospitals to speed up the construction of the new units.

Following is the News Release.

New Hospital Units in Toronto and London to Treat Complex Blood Cancers

Ontario is increasing access to stem cell transplants for people who have complex blood cancers, with new state-of-the-art hospital units in Toronto and London.

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, was at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto today to make the announcement.

The new and modern inpatient units will address an increasing demand for stem cell transplants, and will be located in two major hospitals:

  • Princess Margaret Cancer Centre will have 15 new inpatient beds and a new outpatient clinic that will support up to eight new stem cell therapy physicians.
  • London Health Sciences Centre will have seven new inpatient beds, a renovated and larger outpatient treatment clinic, and a new outpatient and chemotherapy pharmacy.

When complete, patients in Ontario that need stem cell transplants will benefit from 22 new beds, which will allow for a total of 440 stem cell transplants per year.

Ontario is also releasing the year-end report from the Minister's Stem Cell Consultation Group, which includes progress made in expanding capacity and access for stem cell transplants in Ontario. Today's announcement has been informed by the group's advice on improving stem cell delivery and the patient experience.

Ontario is increasing access to care, reducing wait times and improving the patient experience through its Patients First Action Plan for Health Care and OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare.

England win Women’s World Cup in thrilling finish

England won their fourth Women's World Cup when Anya Shrubsole took six wickets to clinch a nine-run victory over India amid delirious scenes at a packed Lord's on Sunday.

The home side looked in danger of defeat as India chased down their total of 228-7, but an astonishing spell of seam bowling by England's vice-captain turned the game on its head in the most nail-biting of finishes.

India were coasting on 191-3 when Shrubsole took the key wicket of Poonam Raut, lbw for 86, and the inexperienced middle order collapsed to 219 all out in the 49th over.

Apart from her wickets, Shrubsole also played a key role in the run out of Shikha Pandey, collecting sharply in the covers and throwing back to wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, when India were still in the game needing 14 off the last three overs.

As a youngster, Shrubsole once watched her father Ian play club cricket at Lord's and she said to play a starring role in England's victory was a dream come true.

"It was an amazing game from start to finish," she said. "It was a fitting final for what has been a great World Cup."

Canadian dollar taking aim at 80 cents US for first time in 2 years

Posted on 24 July 2017 by admin

Courtesy: By Pete Evans, CBC News Posted: Jul 24, 2017.

The Canadian dollar is flirting with 80 cents US, a level it hasn't touched since the summer of 2015. Loonie gains almost 10% in 6 weeks, buoyed by strong job market, retail sales and factories ramping up

The Canadian dollar finished last week just below the threshold, settling at 79.76 cents US when stock markets closed on Friday.

Since bottoming out at the start of May, the loonie has gained almost 10 per cent, buoyed by a series of strong data points about the Canadian economy including a strong job market, booming retail sales and factories ramping up production.

While the loonie has been doing some of the heavy lifting on its own, it's also getting a boost from weakness in the U.S. dollar. After hitting its highest level in 14 years shortly after Trump's election on a promise to lower taxes, boost infrastructure and cut red tape, the U.S. dollar has lost ground this summer amid the new administration's inability to get anything done.

"About one-third of the Canadian dollar's move is due to specific, Canada-centric factors," Bank of Montreal economist Doug Porter said last week, "and the rest reflects broader weakening in the U.S. dollar since that point."

The most recent catalyst for the upswing was the Bank of Canada's move to hike interest rates earlier this month, but "it was already turning the corner in the weeks prior," Porter said.

The loonie is surging in part because the gloom over commodity prices has lifted, even if prices are still nowhere near their former highs.

"Until recent weeks, commodity prices had been a headwind for the loonie, trending lower since the start of the year," Porter's colleague at BMO, Benjamin Reitzes, said.

"That turned sharply in late June, as oil perked up, [and] the recent bounce in commodities has added to the loonie's momentum."

Earlier this year, traders were betting heavily against the Canadian dollar. But that all changed in June when the deputy governor of the Bank of Canada first started musing publicly about raising rates.

After seven years since a hike, the sudden optimism caught traders by surprise. They rushed to cancel their short positions — financial contracts they had placed that allowed them to make money when the loonie lost ground.

In barely six weeks, more than 94,000 such contracts were unwound, Bloomberg data shows — a massive move in a such a short time frame.

"Markets were consistently looking for the Canadian economy/housing market to stumble," Reitzes said. "The Bank of Canada shift caught short sellers off guard, forcing them to cover their positions as the loonie strengthened, driving even more buying."

While that's unlikely to last, the impact of the shorts taking their money off the table has already been felt. And there are other factors at play that could give the loonie rally some legs.

Oil price rebound

Compared with other commodity-reliant currencies like the Australian dollar, the Brazilian real and the Russian ruble, the loonie still isn't being fairly priced, economist David Rosenberg at Toronto money manager Gluskin Sheff Inc. said.

"While it is fair to say that the Canadian dollar is no longer a screaming buy at current levels," he said, "the rally has more to go."

He added: "Really, in recent weeks all we have seen is the Canadian dollar move from significantly undervalued to more fairly valued."

If the loonie has a few more cents of runway as Rosenberg suggests, that could be a double-edged sword for the resurgent Canadian economy — good news for Canadians' purchasing power, but bad news for Canadian businesses trying to export goods and services overseas.

"While those planning a vacation abroad are no doubt pleased with the Canadian dollar's recent run," Reitzes said, "the Bank of Canada may be a little more apprehensive."

Sam “The Man” – we never forget!

Posted on 20 July 2017 by admin

Colombo – 1957,a boy who had just left school was asked to play the Saxophone for Leonard Franke’s band “The Manhattans.” He never looked back. Music was to become his life for the next sixty years. It took him from the Royal Albert Hall in London to the United States, Salzburg-Austria, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Zambia, The Middle-East, India, Pakistan and Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The importance of being Nihal Samarasinghe, popularly known as ‘Sam the Man,’is more than being an “icon of the Sri Lanka English popular music scene.”A man like Sam had to be around for sixty years in post-independent Sri Lanka, to lead us confidently in singing the songs of the dominant global culture. As a nation, competing in international arenas with our own dialect of Sri Lankan English, with its own Sri Lankan English linguistic diction, he had to be there.

Men like Sam were the pioneer builders of that popular self-confidence of Sri Lanka as an English speaking nation, singing the popular songs of the English speaking world, anywhere in the world. He earned the accolade ‘King’ of the Sing Along, having introduced the first Sing Along Concert in Sri Lanka in 1997, together with the Y’s men of Sri Lanka.

Sixty years after he left S.Thomas’ for a career in music, he was laid to rest on Sunday, July 16 2017. His old school in Mount Lavinia in a rare gesture of condolence lowered the school flag to half-mast. It was perhaps the first time that S.Thomas’ College had honoured an old boy for his music, in this manner. When he was taken away from his home at 50 Hotel Road, Mount Lavina after a simple Buddhist ceremony, college prefects sang the college song before his casket, and carried him away.

He played his Saxophone and sang his songs in his eightieth year in life. That was the beauty of his existence. He leaves behind powerful memories of how he gave brave and beautiful expression to his songs. Those who performed with him with “The Jetliners” in the 1960’s and later with his own “Sam the Man and his Gaylord’s” have said of Sam, “music had an unexplainable fascination for Sam, the chords coloured his life” describing him as “a man with an inimitable style of performing.”

His music of the night which reverberated from the sanctums of the Old Thomians’ Swimming Club, leaves behind the echoes of the “ Tennessee Waltz,” “Beyond the Reef,” “Stranger on the Shore,” “My Way,” “It’s only a paper Moon,” “Marie the Dawn is Breaking” to the moments of sunset at the Terrace of the Mount Lavinia Hotel with “Red sails in the Sunset,” “South of the Border,” “I’ll take you home again Kathleen” or the evenings at the Harbour Room of the Grand Oriental Hotel in Fort with “He’ll have to go,” “Moonlight and Roses,” “Banks of the Ohio,” to “Darling how can you forget so soon.”

This was his flamboyant life style for six decades. Sam the Man with his Saxophone and his songs which brought happiness and left memories of great moments to hundreds in Sri Lanka and overseas, as one of Sri Lanka’s true international entertainers.

There was also a routine disciplined lifestyle of “Sam the Man” in Mount Lavinia. He derived his strength from the simplicity of his life style which enabled him to sing along to his eightieth year. On Sunday mornings he used to walk to the Sunday fair at the Mount Lavinia junction looking for herbs, a fascinating “organic” collection that turns up at the stalls of small vendors, to make his nectar for healthy living. Then three or four times a week he used to walk to the S.Thomas’Swimming Pool, for the swims he used to relish.

Away from the glamour of the lights of the many evenings of his life, he knew how to live his life in relaxed comfort. Of course Sam and his wife Felicia were bestowed with a home in one of the few remaining gardens on Hotel Road. Their son Nuwan is pursuing his own career in computer engineering, and his own interest in music in the United States.

It was in that tiny world of the men’s changing room of the S.Thomas’swimming pool that he used to hold sway. His conversation with a few of us, the regulars who hardly knew much about music, turned into a fascinating exercise. He enlightened us from the history of Jazz and its New Orleans days, to popular English country music, and the issues in creating good taste in western music and song, in Sri Lanka.

He was trying to tell us we have never belonged outside the global home; we all cannot but share with others across the world. They were contained in the iconic nature of some of those songs of the international popular English music scene, he sang for us in Sri Lanka.

In the evening of his life “Sam the Man,” “the icon of our club” left with us a picture of a man who has led a meaningful, productive and disciplined life in the Sri Lanka popular English music scene.
