OTTAWA — Canada's economy picked up steam in the first three months of this year, driven by consumer spending, a turnaround in business investment, and the housing market, the national statistics agency said Wednesday.

Statistics Canada said real gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of 3.7 per cent in the first quarter in a broad-based expansion.

Bank of Montreal chief economist Doug Porter called it "a pretty impressive result."

"We've now had three quarters in a row of quite solid activity in Canada, so this is not a flash in the pan by any means. It does look like the economy is moving beyond the oil shock," Porter said.

He said he's now predicting growth for this year will come in at about 2.7 per cent, compared with an earlier prediction of 2.5 per cent.

"It's not a big change, but every turn of the screw helps," Porter said.

Despite the increase in the pace of growth, it was below expectations. Economists had estimated annualized growth of 3.9 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters.

And TD Bank senior economist Brian DePratto said there are issues lurking beneath the surface, including evidence that housing markets are beginning to cool off.

"At the same time, the environment for business investment should remain supportive, but elevated uncertainty is likely to cap the pace of growth," he said in an analyst note.

"Consumers are likely to keep their wallets open, helped by past gains in housing wealth. But, it is again unlikely that the pace of first quarter growth, particularly for durable goods spending, can be maintained, and the credit-fuelled nature of recent spending growth remains concerning."

In a separate report Wednesday, the International Monetary Fund said the Canadian economy has regained momentum, but that the risks to the outlook are significant. It raised concerns about household debt and the possibility of a correction in the housing market.

The IMF also said business investment remains weak, non-energy exports have underperformed and housing market imbalances have risen.

"Macroprudential policy needs to protect the resilience of the household and banking sector," the IMF said.

It suggested a further tightening of tax-based measures to mitigate speculative investment in the housing sector and called for greater co-ordination between federal and provincial regulators.

Canadian economic growth in the first quarter came on multiple fronts.

Business investment in residential structures rose 3.7 per cent, boosted by new construction, the strong real estate market in Ontario and a gain in renovation activity.

After falling in four of the previous five quarters, investment in machinery and equipment advanced 5.8 per cent. Household final consumption increased 1.1 per cent, led by vehicle purchases.

However, Porter noted that exports were an area of key weakness in the GDP report.

"That is to me the one serious blemish in this report," he said. "That is a serious, legitimate concern and it's something the Bank of Canada is obviously concerned about."

Growth in March was stronger than expected, with GDP growing 0.5 per cent, above estimates of 0.2 per cent. Goods-producing industries climbed 0.9 per cent, while service industries added 0.3 per cent.

Overall annualized growth figures for the second half of 2016 were also revised higher Wednesday. The figures for the third and fourth quarters were increased to 4.2 per cent and 2.7 per cent compared to earlier readings of 3.8 per cent and 2.6 per cent, respectively.

Sri Lanka Prime Minister off to US for medical treatment: Minister

Posted on 31 May 2017 by admin

May 30, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has left the country for medical treatment in the United States, Health Minister Rajitha Senarathne revealed.

Minister Senarathne, speaking at a press conference held Tuesday at the Disaster Management Center, said that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had postponed this medical examination over the past 18 months.

“Actually, the PM went for medical examinations which he had been postponing for the past 18 months,” Senarathne said.

“But he is continuously in touch with the disaster situation. There is a briefing every six hours and he gives necessary instructions.”

Senarathne said there was a high powered meeting at Temple Trees on Monday with relevant officials about the current disaster situation.

He said a new disaster relief loan scheme which will be introduced soon for small and medium scale enterprises was approved yesterday based on the instructions of the Prime Minister.

The scheme will provide relief of up to two billion rupees, Senarathne said without giving details.

Senarathne further said Disaster Management Minister who was attending an international disaster management meeting in Mexico for the past few days is expected today.

Meanwhile, the President has ordered the halt of all vehicle purchases for the government during this year.

News Release: Ontario Raising Minimum Wage to $15 Per Hour

Increase Will Help More Than a Quarter of Ontario’s Employees to Get Ahead

Ontario is proposing the largest increase to the minimum wage in the province's history, raising it to $15 per hour, as part of a plan to create better jobs and fair workplaces. This will give more than a quarter of employees in the province a pay increase and will help ensure that more workers are benefitting from Ontario's economic growth.

Ontario's economy has outperformed all G7 countries in real GDP growth over the past three years, and unemployment is at a 16-year low. But the nature of work is also changing. People are working longer, jobs are less secure and benefits are not the same as they used to be. Many employees are working long hours and still struggling to support their families on the current minimum wage of $11.40.

Premier Kathleen Wynne was at the YWCA Toronto today to talk about the government's plan to increase the minimum wage to $14 per hour on January 1, 2018, and $15 per hour on January 1, 2019, followed by annual increases at the rate of inflation.

Ontario is committed to moving forward in a balanced way. Ontario will work closely with businesses of all sizes to support them as these changes come into effect, so they can continue to succeed and keep the economy strong. Raising the minimum wage will help businesses by improving productivity, increasing employee retention and boosting the purchasing power of workers.

Creating fair workplaces and better jobs across Ontario is part of our plan to grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

QUICK FACTS

  • Half of the workers in Ontario who earn less than $15 per hour are between the ages of 25 and 64, and the majority are women.
  • The minimum wage increase is part of a landmark package of proposals to help create fair workplaces and better jobs. This includes ensuring that part-time workers are paid the same hourly wage as full-time workers for doing the same job, introducing paid personal emergency leave days for every worker, expanding personal emergency leave and making employee scheduling fairer.
  • Earlier this month, Ontario released the final report of the Changing Workplaces Review, the first-ever independent review of the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and Labour Relations Act, 1995.

Kumar Sangakkara falls short of historic sixth ton

Posted on 31 May 2017 by admin

Surrey 369 (Sangakkara 200, S Curran 90, Porter 4-89) and 260 for 9 dec (Sangakkara 84, Burns 50, Porter ) drew with Essex 383 (Lawrence 107, ten Doeschate 53, Browne 52, Wagner 50).

It came down to 16 runs that weren't. In pursuit of a record-equaling sixth first-class hundred in as many innings, Kumar Sangakkara was dismissed for 84 on the final day of Surrey's scrap with Essex at Chelmsford. The air was muggy with summer rain and the wider game's expectation. Both dampened spirits. Perhaps Surrey's stand-in captain Rory Burns summed it up best: "We're all probably more upset than he is."

Let's not lose perspective here. Sangakkara is one of five to score five centuries on the bounce. Otherworldly company was awaiting him had he notched just one more. But those five (one of them a double) should be celebrated rather than the sixth-that-wasn't mourned. Mike Procter only played seven Tests. Don Bradman fell four runs short of averaging 100. CB Fry lost the 1902 FA Cup Final in a replay. Even the three who made it still carried their own regrets.

What needs to be said is that if Sangakkara had got there, this would have been the most impressive of the run. His first 79 runs took guts and a lot of luck. History aside, his 286 in this match and twin-centuries last week against Middlesex have seen Surrey avoid two chastening defeats.

Simon Harmer thought he had him trapped lbw before lunch on 25. There were a couple of very tight run-out calls, too. His stance, usually so still, had a sway, like reeds moved by a wind you couldn't notice. Was it nerves? He has played three world finals, led his country during arguably its most politically and socially volatile period and has been shot at while traveling to a match. Probably not nerves, then.

Burns fell after bringing up his third fifty of the season, from 107 balls. Soon emerged the man everyone was waiting for. Did he know he was on the cusp of equalling the record? Almost certainly. His wife and two children were present at Chelmsford, just in case. One thing was for sure – he certainly knew the forecast for rain, racing to 25 from his opening 25 balls. It was on. Lunch came upon the fall of Scott Borthwick's wicket.

Then, it looked off and full credit for that belongs to Jamie Porter, whose spell of 5 for 15 in 27 balls – which started with the dismissal of Borthwick – turned the match on its head. Dom Sibley, first ball after lunch, nicked to James Foster, who took an excellent catch to his right. Ben Foakes was surprised and bunted to cover. Sam Curran was caught across his stumps from around the wicket before brother Tom went for a shot too many and edged to Foster once more. Porter had a fourth five-wicket haul and career-best match figures of 9 for 160. Sangakkara, running out of partners, watched it all unfold on 37.

For the second ime in the match, it would be Stuart Meaker who batted above and beyond his average to guide Surrey to safety (they were only 163 ahead when he arrived) and keep Sangakkara company. This time he had the added pressure of being the one to see Sanga to No. 6.

ROAR REPORT: Disaster Situation Report – Sri Lanka: May 28–29, 2017

Posted on 29 May 2017 by admin

Excellent read. Following is a report posted by Road.Lk

Disaster Situation Report: May 28–29, 2017.

Casualties And Affected Areas

According to the latest situation report by the Disaster Management Centre (May 29, 12:00 p.m.), rains, floods, and landslides across 15 districts have now affected 521,384 people, belonging to 140,238 families. So far, 169 deaths have been confirmed by the DMC, along with 88 injuries, and 102 people reported missing.

The DMC also estimates that 446 houses have been destroyed, and a further 4,362 houses damaged, while 75,308 people from 18,663 families are currently being housed at 337 temporary shelters.

Affected districts include Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matale, Kandy, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Matara, Hambantota, Galle, Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Nuwara Eliya. The highest numbers of deaths were reported from the Ratnapura district (71) and the Kalutara district (53).

Earlier yesterday (May 28), the NBRO issued landslide alerts for seven districts: Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Hambantota, and Nuwara Eliya.

The Department of Meteorology has also issued an adverse weather warning for May 29 and 30.

As of last night, a number of divisional secretariats of the Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya districts were issued an evacuation notice.

This afternoon, the Disaster Management Centre advised evacuees not to return to their homes until further notice.

Search, Rescue, And Relief

The Army deployed 1,700 troops and 45 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) on the ground yesterday. According to Military Spokesperson Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne, the Pahiyangala and Kalawana areas were inaccessible at first, but they were later able to reach these areas with Air Force assistance. He added that troops have been able to access almost all affected areas for relief and rescue operations, and have thus far rescued 3,426 people from 854 families.

The military commenced work yesterday on clearing blocked routes, including those from Nivithigala to Kalawana, and Deraniyagala to Morawaka. Troops were also deployed to strengthen the bunds at Panapitiya and around the Nilwala river.

An SLAF Airman, Sergeant Y. M. S. Yaparathna, who died from injuries sustained during a rescue operation at Neluwa in Galle, was yesterday promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer by the Air Force Commander.

Earlier today, a Sri Lanka Air Force MI-17 helicopter carrying relief aid to flood victims in the South crash landed in a flooded village after the pilot lost control, but no casualties were reported.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross (SLRC) meanwhile is currently operating in seven districts: Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and Colombo. According to an SLRC spokesperson, they are working upon the government’s recommendations and not independently. The SLRC has been meeting with the Government Agents of affected areas, obtaining lists of areas that need their attention, and directing their relief efforts accordingly.

Out of those, in Ratnapura, Galle and Matara, they are still rescuing victims marooned in the floods and transporting them to safe locations (designated by respective Divisional Secretariats) via boats. In other areas, distribution of relief supplies, such as food and medicine, has been ongoing since yesterday. The SLRC is also operating medical camps in Colombo and Gampaha. Based on their experience from previous flood relief efforts, they say they are anticipating an epidemic of dengue and leptospirosis (rat fever) in affected areas in the coming days. People who came to contact with the flood water need to be on the lookout for skin sores and signs of fever—especially people with diabetes.

The SLRC says that they have enough supplies to cope with the Emergency Phase. However, if it rains the next few days, they expect to run out of medical supplies. People are encouraged to make monetary contributions, as opposed to foodstuffs, which could go to waste.

According to Mahieash Jonney, SLRC Senior Manager, Communications and Partnerships, the real problem will begin after the water levels go down, when media attention withdraws and international aid dries up. From their experience, he said, Sri Lanka doesn’t do well in the Long Term Recovery phase. For example, the Red Cross still maintains a camp for victims of the Aranayake landslide, which happened in May, last year.

The recent disasters have also gained widespread international attention, and foreign aid has been arriving. The second vessel carrying aid and relief supplies from India arrived in Colombo last morning. The Chinese government has offered disaster relief aid worth USD 2.2 million, while the governments of Canada and Australia also pledged to provide assistance as required.

SriLankan Airlines to establish its presence in Australia

SriLankan Airlines to establish its presence in Australia

Melbourne joins the Airline’s global route network from October 2017

Colombo May 28, 2017: SriLankan Airlines, the National Carrier of Sri Lanka and a member of the prestigious oneworld alliance, will be establishing its presence in Australia with daily non-stop services to Melbourne commencing October 29th this year.

Australia is home to one of the largest Sri Lankan expatriate communities, many of whom reside in and around Melbourne, the capital of Australia’s ‘Garden State’, Victoria. This factor, together with the tremendous potential for business travel and Victoria’s growing student population convinced the Airline to plan for the launch of non-stop daily services to Melbourne.

The non-stop services will also facilitate passengers from the Middle East and South Asia seeking onward connectivity via Colombo to/from Australia.

SriLankan Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Captain Suren Ratwatte said “Our presence in Australia cements the long-standing relationship between our two countries. We recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our nations, and the addition of Melbourne signifies our strategy of optimizing the Airline’s network in line with our restructuring. This also means that we have connected another continent to our global route map. On the other hand, given the number of Sri Lankans residing in and around Victoria, we fulfill a long felt need for a direct service. We are proud to welcome all the diverse residents of Victoria who can now enjoy the direct connections when visiting their friends and families throughout our network.”

The Airline will be operating Airbus 330-200 aircraft on the route, offering its passengers modern in-flight comforts complemented with its award winning service and the world renowned Sri Lankan warmth and hospitality.

The flight schedule is as follows;

From

Days of operation

SriLankan Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Siva Ramachandran said, “Despite the absence of direct connections, we have witnessed a steady increase in passengers travelling between Colombo and Melbourne via various Asian connecting points such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Our direct services will give us a definite advantage as SriLankan is the only carrier that is able to offer connectivity of this nature at this time. We also offer seamless onward connections beyond Colombo to a range of destinations in the Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East. With the launch of the new services, SriLankan Airlines’ passengers will also have the choice of flying to other Australian cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide as well as Auckland, New Zealand. SriLankan Airlines will continue to explore potential expansion opportunities across its network in order to facilitate the envisaged growth in business.”

Australia’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Bryce Hutchesson said, “We congratulate SriLankan Airlines on the addition of a direct flight to Australia.   Direct air connections between countries stimulate two-way tourism, business, trade and people-to-people exchange which are the core ingredients for a vibrant bilateral relationship.  We are seeing a growing number of Australians looking to travel to Sri Lanka for tourism and business, and to reconnect with family.  And we welcome the growing number of Sri Lankans travelling to Australia for education, business, to explore Australia’s culture and natural wonders, and of course to catch up with family and friends.”

Widely known as “a city for all seasons,” Melbourne offers the travellers a wide variety of historic and natural attractions along with urban cityscapes preserving colonial architecture. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, offers heritage, wildlife as well as adventure sports and surfing hotspots for the adventurous Australian traveller. Over the years, the two countries have shared a mutual passion– cricket, which has inspired fans to travel the distance in support of their respective home teams.

More importantly, Australia accounts for one of the largest Sri Lankan communities living outside Sri Lanka, out of which almost 50 per cent lives in and around Victoria, making Melbourne the convenient terminus for their departures and arrivals.

For the convenience of travellers seeking onward connectivity from its Colombo hub, SriLankan currently connects over 10 Indian points with over 100 flights a week, which includes services to/from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Trivandrum, Tiruchirappalli, Cochin, Mumbai and New Delhi. SriLankan will be adding Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore and Hyderabad to its route network in July this year, further expanding its presence in India.

The Airline’s Middle Eastern services include over fifty weekly flights to/from nine Middle Eastern destinations, including daily services out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Muscat, Bahrain and Kuwait. The Airline also offers its passengers the option of exploring popular holiday destinations such as Seychelles and Maldives’ Male and Gan Island.

These operations will further complement the existing double daily services offered by SriLankan Airlines between Sri Lanka and Australia via Singapore and Kuala Lumpur with its codeshare partners, Qantas and Malaysia Airlines.
