Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka Juana Elena Rodrigues invited the Sri Lankan business community to explore business opportunities in pharmaceutical, renewable energy, agro-food, tourism and real estate development and agriculture sectors in Cuba. Speaking at a seminar on ‘Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka and Cuba’ organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka she said as bi-lateral trade volumes between the two countries is currently below its potential level. The Cuban government is looking at possibilities of creating much needed trade and investment ties with Sri Lanka in a bid to take the bi-lateral trade activities to the next level.

Cuba has established commercial relations with 160 major countries and Rodrigues expressed confidence that Sri Lanka will also become Cuba’s major trading partner in the near future. Sri Lanka and Cuba established diplomatic ties in 1959. Cuba is mostly recognised as a sugar producing country and famous for its Cuban cigars, and calypso music.

Sri Lanka imports from Cuba, sugar, nickel, fish, citrus fruits, tobacco products, medicinal products and coffee. Sri Lanka exports ceramicware, tea, coconut coir, apparel and clothing, precious and semi precious stones and leather goods to Cuba. The most important mineral resource is nickel. Cuba has significantly increased its market share of Caribbean tourism in the last decade; as a result of significant investment in tourism infrastructure.

Mövenpick Hotel Colombo – the city’s first new international five-star property in 25 years – was inaugurated by President Maithripala Sirisena this morning. It’s a milestone that reflects the country’s new-found energy and optimism.

The strikingly-modern 24-floor property, which officially opens its doors to guests on 16th January, will see Swiss management firm Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts introduce a unique hospitality concept that brings attitude and altitude to the Sri Lankan capital.

It’s also the destination’s first urban hotel and introduces a ‘vertical experience’ like no other, with every floor, from the ground to the roof, offering a different themed concept, taking guests on a journey of discovery.

Set to become a Colombo icon, this edgy, but sophisticated property is characterised by its modern architecture. The epitome of style, the diamond-shaped exterior blends well with the organic hanging gardens, boasting some 14,310 plants.

All 219 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, the Rooftop Bar boasts the best city and ocean views in town, and the property’s inventive culinary offering promises fun and theatre with a unique design edge.

“We are offering guests a vertical experience like no other, giving them the opportunity to view the beauty of Colombo from a new perspective and across many exciting concepts,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Chief Operating Officer, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East and South Asia.

“Mövenpick Hotel Colombo is an inspirational modern landmark that introduces exciting new hospitality concepts to the city; this signifies a new era of prosperity for an island nation re-energised and undergoing rapid development.”

Located in the heart of Colombo’s thriving business, commercial, and political district, close to the city’s famous ‘Pola’ – the bustling local market – and several historical sites, the property’s open-plan design with oversized windows gives a sense of space.

There are 219 guest rooms including Junior Suites, Executive Suites and a Presidential Suite, all luxuriously furnished and offering access to the rooftop infinity pool and Jacuzzi.

With the fast-growing corporate and incentive markets in mind, the property offers the largest executive lounge and rooms in the city, as well as a dedicated business traveller reception, while Banquet facilities include five meeting rooms and a boardroom.

True to the hospitality brand’s gastronomic roots, the dining experience is the heart and soul of the hotel, with seven creative bar and restaurant concepts from which to choose, all promising unique themes, theatre and cuisine created with passion.

They include the Brasserie – Colombo’s first in-hotel classic French restaurant, as well as: Robata Grill & Lounge serving Japanese cuisine and sushi; all-day-dining venue AYU; Vistas Rooftop Bar & Lounge; the exclusive Mansion bar and night lounge; the chic Lobby Lounge; and the Pool Bar where drinks and light meals can be enjoyed while savouring the city vistas.

FRESH TENDERS CALLED FOR RAIL COACHES

Posted on 31 January 2017 by admin

Courtesy: Sunday Observer. 29 January, 2017.

After the rejection of the initial tenders for the procurement of 170 coaches for the Railway Department due to the shortlisted companies’ inability to satisfy tender requirements, the Cabinet has granted approved to call fresh tenders to purchase coaches for the Railways Department, Secretary to Transport Ministry, Nihal Somaweera said.

The company initially selected for the tender had quoted a higher price than the second bidder on which grounds the second bidder appealed to the tender appeal commission and both tenders were subsequently rejected.

He said, “This went to the tender appeal board and the board wanted to cancel the tender offers. The Cabinet has now approved to restart the tender procedure.”

At the initial tender calling, two finalists, Texmaco Rail and Engineering Ltd of Kolkata and Rites Ltd of Gurgaon were selected and Texmaco Rail was unable to satisfy the prerequisite where the company had to show it had been in exporting business for at least five years.

This was due to the fact that the liberalization of the Indian market in the sector took place only around three years back.

Texmaco Rail’s effort to circumvent this shortcoming was to sign up with a second company that was in a position to satisfy the tender requirements. However, their bid was not selected despite offering less than half the prices than Rites Ltd as the board learnt that the joining up of the two companies were done subsequent to placing the tender and was not so mentioned in the tender documents.

“The funding for this project comes under the Indian Credit Line hence there are certain conditions that needs to be adhered to. The Indian Embassy has written to us that the second company doesn’t have sufficient experience in manufacturing of mainline carriages. They have done other things like tank wagons and other transport wagons. But not passenger transport,” he explained.

Asked whether there will be new conditions to the tenders after concurrence by the Indian Exim Bank, under the new credit line guidelines, he said the Ministry will have to develop the new tender conditions and submit it to the concurrence of the donor bank which is Indian EXIM bank,” he said. The companies to place bids were initially nominated through the Indian High Commission.

Canadian economy tops expectations in November as manufacturing stages comeback

Posted on 31 January 2017 by admin

Courtesy: Craig Wong, The Canadian Press Published Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

OTTAWA — The Canadian economy picked up a bit of steam in November, growing slightly more than expected as the manufacturing sector regained much of the ground it lost the previous month.

Statistics Canada said Tuesday real domestic product grew by 0.4 per cent in November compared with the 0.3 per cent gain that had been anticipated by economists, according to Thomson Reuters.

The result for October was also revised to show the economy shrank by 0.2 per cent compared with an initial reading of a 0.3 per cent contraction.

The rebound in November was broad-based, though analysts took particular note of the strengthening manufacturing sector. It gained 1.4 per cent following an abysmal performance in October that saw a 1.7 per cent decline.

"After the surge we saw in export volumes in the trade report for November, a healthy print from the manufacturing sector was to be expected," CIBC economist Nick Exarhos wrote in a report.

"Still, there's a lot of work to be done in the sector, with output up only a slim 0.6 per cent from a year ago. Investment intentions point to a needed upturn in capacity for the year ahead, but we'll need to see a bit more vigour in exports to see those plans materialize."

Other sectors that helped boost growth for the month included the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction group, which expanded by 1.4 per cent, as well as the finance and insurance sector, which gained 1.5 per cent. The construction group added 1.1 per cent.

For November, goods-producing industries rose 0.9 per cent, while service-producing industries gained 0.2 per cent, helped by finance and insurance, retail trade and transportation and warehousing.

TD Bank senior economist Brian DePratto called the November report "one of the healthiest monthly GDP reports in recent memory."

He said growth in the fourth quarter of 2016 is likely to come in ahead of the Bank of Canada's expectations of 1.5 per cent, but a significant amount of economic slack will nevertheless remain.

"As such, the Bank of Canada will probably be happy to leave its policy interest rate at 0.5 per cent well into the future, helping to support the ongoing absorption of the remaining slack," DePratto wrote.

Lead with humility: Leadership lessons from Pope Francis

The connection that exists between a leader and those being led is, like most relationships, seldom easy to understand or take out. The satisfaction that leaders derive from having an impact over others is not easy to unpack.  Generally, there are two kinds of power. “Personal power” gathers energy and excitement from winning, from standing over and above others as champion and winner. This brand of power reflects a deep need for total control, for being the one who takes charge of things and gets things done.

A second kind of power is what is called “social power.” Social power is likewise consumed with having impact over others. But its primary intent is not to throw around one’s personal strength and influence. Instead, it aims to elevate others in a way that cultivates and help their followers to realise their full potential.

It draws on inspiring connections and symbolic actions to help people find their own power, both individually and collectively, and to use it to positively affect their world. Social power generates energy and enthusiasm to get things done but in a way that is collective and inclusive.

The current head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis exemplifies this second kind of power – what social power is and the impact it intends. In his time so far as leader of a fragmented church and a weakened hierarchy, his bold challenge to ignite social reform, reveal an untiring effort on changing hearts.

Apart from his words, his actions offer even clearer evidence of this driver at work. His choice of name and a more humble home reflect a simple recognition that change begins first and foremost from within – a stunning admission, even for a religious leader.

On the other hand President Donald Trump is a classic example of personal power. More than any other public figure in recent memory, his gleeful chants of “winning at the polls” alongside the endless revelling in his wealth and achievements and also conquests represents personal power disrobed and on full display.

Meaning of leadership

Leadership is very hard to define, mainly because it means different things to different people. We know it requires knowledge, competence, courage and empathy. We expect leaders to be just, to share our values and provide direction. For me, it is what leaders like Pope Francis represent.

An encounter with Pope Francis leaves you inspired and spiritually moved. The Pope is warm, inviting, and sincere. From choosing to live in a simple apartment instead of the papal palace, to washing the feet of men and women in a youth detention centre, Pope Francis’s actions contradict behaviours expected of a modern leader.

He shows how his words and deeds reveal spiritual principles that have helped him to lead the Church in the past and present and also to influence our world—a rapidly-changing world that requires leaders who value the human need for love, inspiration and purpose.

Father Jorge Bergoglio

Many people who knew Pope Francis as Father Jorge Bergoglio, talks of a man whose passion was to be with people, of all walks of life. He offers a stirring vision of leadership to which we can all aspire in our communities, religious institutions, companies, and families.

In our interconnected and complex world where so many complain about a crisis of leadership exist, Pope Francis, is a leader focused not on status but on a mission. He is an example for leaders of all types, religious and for political leaders, who recognise the need to cultivate character and the ability to hold competing values as we navigate change, whether in business, organisations or society itself.

Inspiring leader

When Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen as the 266th pope of the Catholic Church in March in 2013 — taking the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi — he immediately showed the world he would be different from that of his predecessors.

He said ‘no’ to the fancy red loafers favoured by Pope Benedict XVI, opting for simple black shoes. He declined the papal limo for a bus ride. For living quarters, he chose the Vatican guesthouse over an apartment in the Apostolic Palace.

Since his election, Pope Francis has defied all the papal traditions and charmed the world. He offers hope and insight into what an inspiring leader can look like. We have many politicians globally who don’t really govern but focus on self-promotion, with little thought of making the world a better place. And we have bosses and managers leading as a means to get ahead, ignoring the importance of the people they are expected to lead.

Pope Francis has shown the world that if you place your own self-interests aside, the people around you will work harder for you and loyalty will increase. Leaders would do well to take a leaf out of Pope Francis’ book on how to be a true leader by actions and not just words.

He welcomes the homeless for lunch, shows infinite patience to a child running around while delivering a keynote speech and responds personally to people who need him. He has so far shown the world that leadership is all about serving others faithfully and what good leadership should look like; as summarised below:

Six key lessons for leaders

1. Make others feel better about themselves … he seems to make others believe they can be better after they meet with him.

2. Model what you preach … he lives the values of service and charity… incredible personal example

3. Focus on a few things … he is not trying to be all things to all people, but to focus on the few key things that the church stands for

4. Make tough calls… he has relieved some of the cardinals of their position when they don’t follow his example

5. Keep learning … he is evolving church positions to adapt to changing times, but he keeps the traditional values

6. Inclusive… he does not want to exclude anyone from the blessings of his faith and message

In conclusion, inspiring leaders do not take the blind path of ignorance and are not afraid to lead by example, with conviction, visibility and honour and they clearly demonstrate that in leadership, humility is always more important than strategy.

(The writer is a thought leader in HR.)

Roger Federer wins sensational Australian Open Final in five sets

Posted on 31 January 2017 by admin

Roger Federer beats arch-rival Rafael Nadal in five epic sets in the Australian Open final to claim his 18th major title. The 35-year-old, coming off a six-month injury lay-off, has fought past his great rival and bogeyman Rafael Nadal to win the Australian Open in a five-set epic – 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. That match was everything we hoped it would be (and honestly a little bit more) as it kept see-sawing from the first point to the last. Federer looked cooked early in that set, but he kept fighting to stay in it and that break back in the sixth game of the decider came on the back of superb tennis that certainly belied the fatigue he would have been feeling. Nadal looked great and the error count was rising on Federer's side of the net. But Federer survived to pull off a sensational victory.

Just to recap, Federer won his fifth Australian Open SEVEN YEARS after his last one, also winning his 18th major FIVE YEARS after his last one. He's also the second-oldest major winner ever. Not only that, he did at 35 after a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury against a man whose game is tailor-made to beat him. Speaking of Rafael Nadal, his comeback from countless injuries has been a more long-term process and shouldn't be ignored either. Unfortunately for him, he came up against a champion of champions tonight who simply refused to give an inch. Thank you so much for joining me tonight. That was a lot of fun and an impossibly close match. I thought he was done, but now I can't wait to see what else The Fed can do.

He earned himself his 18th grand slam title by playing with verve and precision, defeating four top-10 players here — Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka and Nadal — to win his first Grand Slam title since Wimbledon in 2012. Down a break at 1-3 in the fifth set, Federer rallied to win the last five games of the match.

In fairness, both players produced a super Australian Open 2017 final. Kudos to Federer and Nadal for a match that was a fitting finale to the opening tennis grand slam for the year!

Ontario’s doctors united in their fight against provincial government

Posted on 29 January 2017 by admin

TORONTO, Jan. 29, 2017 /CNW/ – Today, at a Special Meeting of Council, doctors in Ontario affirmed their confidence in the elected leaders of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). Physicians are united in their goal of sending a strong message to government; and, planning is now underway for job action. This is the direct result of the province's on-going refusal to grant binding arbitration, a fair process, which is afforded to all other health-care workers.

"Ontario's doctors are on the verge of job action because the government has shown itself to be completely unwilling to work with us in a productive, professional, and respectful manner," said Dr. Virginia Walley, President of the OMA. "It is with profound disappointment that we must consider job action in order to achieve binding arbitration, which is necessary to right the current power imbalance with the government. This unfair and unreasonable situation allows the government to impose a health-care agenda on Ontario patients that is being developed without the input of the people that Ontarians trust – their physicians."

Over the last three years, Ontario's doctors have seen the government impose multiple, unilateral cuts to the Physician Services Budget, which funds all of the medical care patients need. Under the current government, sweeping and short-sighted changes to health-care legislation have been pushed through–ignoring input from those who treat patients in the community every day.

A recent survey by the OMA shows that members are more engaged than ever, with a substantial majority endorsing the need for job action if the current government approach continues.

It is a fact that more health-care funding is needed to meet the requirements of our aging and growing population. A recent report from the Financial Accountability Office (FAO), an independent branch of the government, shows a substantial gap between what the province is willing to fund for health care and what it will actually cost to provide Ontarians with the care they need. Ontario's population is growing and aging, yet the FAO clearly points out that that the government is funding less than half of the growth in demand for the necessary care that physicians provide. At the same time, the government is cutting the funds available for front-line physician services and creating vast new, expensive bureaucracies with Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and the new sub-LHINs.

"Physicians cannot, on behalf of our patients and the integrity of the system, allow the government to attack health care any longer," said Dr. Walley. "The government is knowingly underfunding the medically necessary care that patients need and have forced the creation of long wait-lists for tests and treatments."

No further public comment on the Special Meeting of OMA Council will be made at this time.

The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) represents more than 42,000 physicians and medical students across the province. Ontario's doctors work closely with patients to encourage healthy living practices and illness prevention. In addition to delivering front-line services to patients, Ontario's doctors play a significant role in helping shape health care policy, as well as implementing initiatives that strengthen and enhance Ontario's health care system.

It’s Chinese New Year 2017, year of the Rooster! What’s your zodiac animal?

Posted on 28 January 2017 by admin

Chinese New Year 2017 – The Year of the Rooster – has begun and will last until Feb 15, 2018.

The new year, also known as the Spring Festival, is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar, so the date changes from year to year.

Each Chinese New Year is characterised by one of 12 animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac.

The Chinese zodiac is divided into 12 blocks (or houses) just like its western counterpart, but with the major difference being that each house has a time-length of one year instead of one month.

This year, it's the Year of the Rooster, the 10th animal in the cycle. The next Year of the Rooster will be in 2029.

The personality of the Rooster

People born in the Year of the Rooster are characterised as honest, energetic, intelligent, flexible and confident. But according to Chinese astrology, the year of your sign is believed to be one of the most unlucky years of your life.

The general image of people in this zodiac sign is that they are hardworking, resourceful, confident and talented.  In addition, their active, talkative and engaging ways make them popular with people. They are happiest when they are in company, enjoying the spotlight. Although they were born with enviable skills, they still have several shortcomings, such as being seen as vain and arrogant with a tendency to brag about their achievements.

Strengths: healthy, sporty, self-assured

Weaknesses: a little sensitive, stressed, moody

Lucky Signs for the Rooster

Chinese New Year's Day Taboos

To be avoided on the first day of the Chinese New Year:

1. Medicine: Taking medicine on the first day of the lunar year means one will get ill for a whole year.

2. New Year's breakfast: Porridge should not be eaten because it is considered that only poor people have porridge for breakfast and people don't want to start the year “poor” as this is a bad omen.

3. Laundry: People do not wash clothes on the first and second day because these two days are celebrated as the birthday of Shuishen (水神,  the Water God).

4. Washing hair: Hair must not be washed on the first day of the lunar  year. In the Chinese language, hair (发) has the same pronunciation and  character as 'fa' in facai (发财), which means ’to become wealthy’.  Therefore, it is seen as not a good thing to “wash one’s fortune away”  at the beginning of the New Year.

5. Sharp objects: The use of knives and scissors is to be avoided as any accident is thought to lead to inauspicious things and the depletion of  wealth.

6. Going out: A woman may not leave her house otherwise she will be plagued with bad luck for the entire coming year. A married daughter is  not allowed to visit the house of her parents as this is believed to  bring bad luck to the parents, causing economic hardship for the family.

7. The broom: If you sweep on this day then your wealth will be swept away too.

8. Crying children: The cry of a child is believed to bring bad luck to the family so parents do their best to keep children as happy as  possible.

9. Theft: Having your pocket picked is believed to portend your whole  wealth in the coming year being stolen.

10. Debt: Money should not be lent on New Year’s Day and all debts have to be paid by New Year’s Eve. If someone owes you money, do not go to their home to demand it. Anyone who does so will be unlucky all year.

11. An empty rice jar: A depleted receptacle may cause grave anxiety as the cessation of cooking during the New Year period is considered to be an ill omen.

12. Damaged clothes: Wearing threadbare garments can cause more bad luck for the year.

13. Killing things: Blood is considered an ill omen, which will cause misfortunes such as a knife wound or a bloody disaster.

14. Monochrome fashion: White or black clothes are barred as these two colours are traditionally associated with mourning.

15. Welcoming the New Year: According to tradition, people must stay up  late on New Year’s Eve to welcome the New Year and then let off  firecrackers and fireworks to scare off inauspicious spirits and Nian, the New Year monster.

16. Giving of certain gifts: Clocks, scissors, and pears all have a bad meaning in Chinese culture.
