Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Easter

Posted on 26 March 2016 by admin

Ottawa, Ontario

25 March 2016

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Easter:

“This weekend, millions of Canadians and people around the world will join with friends and family to celebrate the Easter holiday.

“Easter is the holiest of Christian holidays, and marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“It is a sacred time for many, and an opportunity for us all to extend a helping hand to those in need, and to reflect on the notions of personal sacrifice and compassion that underlie the occasion.

“As we gather with those most important to us, let us put into practice what it truly means to love our neighbours as ourselves.

“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish all those celebrating a very happy Easter. We hope all Canadians, no matter their faith, find this a time of optimism, renewal, and new beginnings.”

Easter 2016 and Good Friday in Canada.

Good Friday is on March 25 in 2016 and Easter Monday is on March 28.

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday and it is a federal statutory holiday across Canada.

It's a complicated but precise formula that determines the day Easter Sunday is celebrated: It is the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring (after March 21st) which can occur as early March 22 and as late as April 25.

Good Friday marks the death of Jesus Christ according to the Christian religion. It is a fundamental part of Christianity along with the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. Many agree that this is a more important holiday than Christmas since it is the ultimate proof that Jesus is the son of God because he came back from death.

ROB FORD will be remembered by Torontonians as “the people’s mayor” (1969-2016)

Posted on 25 March 2016 by admin

By Upali Obeyesekere – Editor, The Times of Sri Lanka.

Rob Ford ArticleRob Ford, one of Toronto’s most prolific and polarizing mayors and councillors, passed away at age of 46. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital Tuesday (March 22) morning after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer called pleomorphic lip sarcoma since 2014. Ford battled the cancer for 18 months.

Ford was the consummate retail politician who had an uncanny knack of making people feel that he really cared about their plights. The self-proclaimed “ordinary guy” drove his own car to work every day – albeit a luxury SUV – and railed against “downtown elites” and a “gravy train” he fought hard to derail at city hall. As councillor or mayor, Rob Ford was easily accessible to the people of Toronto. First elected as a councillor in 2000, Ford sparked controversy almost from the get-go. Popularly referred to as the “Teflon mayor” he survived many challenges of his first and only term as mayor of Toronto.

Rob Ford was larger than life, figuratively and literally. He was one of those rare people that you simply had to care about. Hundreds and thousands of people in Toronto and around the world loved him. He introduced a new style of management as mayor of Toronto – the largest city in Canada. It was most definitely not a conservative style of management. But it was an endearing style that emerged from the fact he was a “grassroots type of politician” who had an enormously large following. Thousands of people remember him as the only mayor who returned their telephone calls, or dropped by their home and spoke to them on a one-on-one basis. Ford became the champion. He heard their cry. He gave voice to their concerns. He never talked down to them, always treated the people with respect. He was their guy at City Hall. He didn’t always win, but he was always willing to go down fighting. When Ford ran for mayor in 2010, this legion was inspired with hope. Hope their lives might get just a little bit better. That the obstacles put in their way by government might become just a bit smaller. The people rallied round their champion and he did not let them down.

Life and times of Rob Ford

A look at some significant dates in the life of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford takes you back to May 28, 1969, when he was born in Toronto as the fourth and youngest child of Doug and Diane Ford. The senior Ford was the founder of DECO Labels – a thriving label making company that is still in existence. He attended high-school at Scarlett Heights Collegiate in the west-end neighbourhood of Etobicoke. He went on to play high school football, a lifelong passion. He went on to study political science at Ottawa’s Carleton University. In 1995, Doug Ford Sr., was elected to the Ontario Legislature as a Conservative MPP during Mike Harris era as Premier of Ontario.

His first stint at politics was in 1997, when he ran unsuccessfully for Toronto city council. However, 2000 was a banner year for Rob Ford. On August 12, he married his high school classmate, Renata Brejniak. On November 13, Ford is elected to his first term on Toronto City Council. He is re-elected to Toronto city council in 2003 with 79% of the vote in Ward 2 – Etobicoke North. By now he had stamped his class as a hard working politician who was ruthlessly honest. In 2006, Rob and Renata are blessed with their first child, a girl named Stephanie. It was this same year that Ford got on the radar of the mainstream media, specially The Toronto Star and National Post. In 2006, Ford is re-elected to Toronto city council, this time with a 66% of the vote. In 2008, Rob and Renata welcomes their second child – a son named Douglas. 2010 was a golden year for the big man. On March 25, Rob Ford announced his candidacy for mayor and is widely dismissed as a long shot. On October 25, Rob Ford is elected Mayor of Toronto with just over 47% of the vote, riding a wave of populist support built on his promise to end the “gravy train” and cut government waste. The next few years were very challenging for Ford. He ran into many personal issues including drug use, drunken behaviour and other misdemeanours. When it came around to the next mayoral election, he withdrew from the race in September 2014, citing health reasons. John Tory went on to win the Toronto crown on October 27, 2014.

Rob Ford’s fifteen-year political life was marred by a few incidents in his personal life that catapulted into making his life at city hall a “living hell”. The mainstream media and Metro Toronto Police hounded Rob Ford for the better part of his four-year term as mayor of Toronto. This writer knew Rob Ford personally and even voted for him in the 2010 mayoralty elections. It was hard to watch the horror scene unfold before us. Soon after Ford became mayor, the mainstream media began investigating him and there was something on “Rob Ford” regularly in the news. In December 2013, a Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale served Mayor Rob Ford with a libel notice over comments the mayor made during a televised interview earlier. Dale had vowed to sue Rob Ford for saying that the journalist took inappropriate photos of the mayor’s children. Another Toronto Star reporter Robyn Doolittle helped bring the Rob Ford crack cocaine scandal to light. At the end of it all, Ford overcame all these challenges but the fight was long and hard. It could be perceived that these tough times may have initially contributed his health condition later.

Rob Ford was a very humane personality. He was a real person. One of the mainstream media had this to say about this larger than life man.Rob Ford's death leaves councillors wondering how life at city hall will change.” City Hall is and will be a very different place without Ford. Yes, things are more calm and quiet. But is that a good thing? Whether it was well reasoned or not, Ford provided an important contrarian viewpoint on council, even if he was often a lone wolf. There is nobody on council filling that role right now.

The SriLankan Anchorman pays a great tribute to the late Rob Ford as a unique politician who crossed our path and made a terrific impact. He came, he saw and conquered City Hall. Our sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Renata, two children Stephanie and Douglas and the rest of the Ford dynasty. May Rob Ford’s soul rest in peace!

"It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life."

Terry Pratchett
