David & Victoria Beckham among stars holidaying in the Maldives

Posted on 30 December 2015 by admin

England soccer ace David Beckham and his family have ended their vacation and left Maldives on Wednesday vowing to make Maldives their holiday destination every year. Maldives Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb was at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) to bid farewell to Beckham, wife Victoria and their four kids who had spent 11 nights at the luxury One&Only Reethi Rah resort in the Maldives. A source on condition of anonymity told Haveeru that Bekham had described his time in Maldives as “the happiest new year holiday” and promised to return to Maldives every year. “He said he will come to Maldives with his family every year. He said he was really satisfied with this vacation and added that it was the happiest New Year holiday so far,” the source said. UK’s The Sun had earlier reported that the Beckhams had cut short their GBP250,000 Christmas break and left the Maldives last Wednesday due to bad weather. However, Haveeru had confirmed that Beckham and his family had not left and were enjoying their holiday in Maldives. Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan star, who left US side LA Galaxy earlier this month, had booked the most expensive suite at the complex which cost GBP8,600 a night. Three others, each at GBP3,700 a night, were also booked and made ready for the couple and their sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, ten, Cruz, seven, and 18-month-old daughter Harper.

Haveeru has confirmed that soccer ace David Beckham and his family are still in Maldives despite an earlier report that the Beckhams had cut short their 11 day visit to Maldives due to bad weather.

“THE Beckhams cut short their GBP250,000 Christmas break in paradise in the Maldives — because it would not STOP RAINING,” UK’s The Sun reported.
“After three days of downpours, David, 37, Victoria, 38, and their four kids decided enough was enough. They boarded a private plane back to Male airport in the Indian Ocean island group on Boxing Day before heading to somewhere sunnier.”

However, an official of the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) and an official of the company which operates Reethi Rah Resort confirmed to Haveeru that the Beckhams were in fact still in Maldives.
“The reports that he [Beckham] had left is a blatant lie. He is still in the resort. The weather there is also quite good,” the official on condition of anonymity told Haveeru.

Former England skipper Becks, who left US side LA Galaxy earlier this month, had booked the most expensive suite at the complex which would cost GBP8,600 a night. Three others, each at GBP3,700 a night, were also booked and made ready for the couple and their sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, ten, Cruz, seven, and 18-month-old daughter Harper.

Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb on Wednesday said several global personalities are coming to the Maldives for the New Year holidays. The Minister told Haveeru that some football, tennis, music and movie stars have begun to arrive in the Maldives for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Tourism authorities are working hard to keep them away from paparazzi and allow them to enjoy their holiday in Maldives in peace, Minister added.

“Such stars coming to spend their holiday in Maldives are great exposure for the country,” Adeeb said.

Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone and British pops star Pixie Lott are currently in Maldives for the festive break. Former England captain David Beckham and Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben are presently in Maldives for the festive break.

Haveeru has found that England soccer ace Beckham is spending his Christmas and New Year Holiday in One and Only Reethi Rah resort.

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan star, who left US side LA Galaxy in January spent his holiday with his family in Maldives last year.

Beckham was taken to the speedboat in a car and whisked away to the resort when he got off the plane to evade paparazzi.

Chelsea FC owner Russian billionaire Roman Abrahamovich and his family are also at the same resort.

Dutch winger Robben had spent a holiday in Maldives after the 2006 World Cup.

The festive break is attracting many global stars to the Maldives including Italian national team players Andrea Poli and Ignazio Abate. Aaron Paul who plays Jesse Pinkman in the award winning American television drama series Breaking Bad, British pop star Pixie Lott and Bollywood diva Deepika Padukone is also reported to be in the Maldives for the New Year holidays.

Meanwhile, another Bollywood actress Nargis Fakhri and her actor boyfriend Uday Chopra is reported to be arriving in the Maldives on Sunday.

Prema Cooray heads five-star Citrus Waskaduwa

Five-Star Citrus Waskaduwa to commence operations in early 2014.

Citrus Waskaduwa owned by Citrus Leisure PLC would commence operations ahead of schedule in early 2014. The overall product offering of Citrus Waskaduwa has been redefined with added luxury, upgraded facilities and new amenities to provide a high end hospitality offering. Although it was originally intended to be a four star property, the latest additions will see it upgraded to a five star resort. Commenting on the decision to reposition Citrus Waskaduwa Director/CEO of Citrus Leisure PLC, Chandana Talwatte said, "Emerging market conditions and evolving demand in the travel and tourism industries resulted in the decision to upgrade the property and its offering. The anticipated landscape of the hospitality offering in this geographic area has also changed. This has created an opportunity for a premium property in Waskaduwa. Furthermore, Citrus Hikkaduwa was also upgraded and refurbished recently which gave rise to the need for the Citrus brand to offer a solution to tourists from the upper segment of the market."As a result of this upgrade Citrus Waskaduwa has invested in up sizing all 150 rooms while also rejuvenating the amenities on offer.

Chairman of the Citrus Leisure Group Prema Cooray said, "The Waskaduwa area has been identified as a potential hub for new tourist markets and the Citrus Leisure Group is in fact very proud to be one of the first leisure groups to introduce a large resort hotel not only in the area but also in the whole of postwar Sri Lanka. The property's proximity to Colombo opens up many new opportunities to entice growing tourism markets specifically in the MICE tourism sectors. However, it must also be said that Citrus Waskaduwa is a place for every type of traveler, be it business or pleasure, who is looking for a complete holiday experience." Citrus Waskaduwa has also invested in initiatives to control anticipated escalating operational costs. These include a large water treatment plant to store and recycle water as well as LED lighting for the entire hotel to save power consumption. Not only do these initiatives benefit the hotel itself, but also serves to ensure environmental protection in keeping with the ethos of sustainability that is a commonplace with Citrus properties. –

Sri Lanka Securities and Exchange Commission keen on attracting foreigners into stock market

Posted on 28 December 2015 by admin

Courtesy: Reuters 2013 – December 27, 2013

Sri Lanka’s Securities and Exchange Commission is talking to government funds about making large share parcels available to foreign investors to boost interest in the stock market, the SEC head told Reuters. Lack of liquidity and concerns over the time it can take to sell shares on the island nation’s 2.43 trillion rupees ($18.6 billion) bourse have deterred foreign funds from buying more than a few select stocks.

Nalaka Godahewa, the head of the SEC, said the regulator is in talks with large government funds on acquiring and building up stakes large enough to attract foreign interest.

“When foreigners come, there must be parcels to buy. This is one area I am talking about to government funds,” Godahewa told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

“They (government funds) must be more strategic and build up and create these parcels when the market prices are low and hold it. Now when the foreigners come, there is a problem in finding (adequate shares). There are no parcels to buy.”

Sri Lanka has attracted a net 22.48 billion rupees ($172 million) foreign inflows into stocks so far this year after a record 33.66 billion rupees last year.

But offshore investors have been buying shares in only around 10 firms, including top conglomerate John Keells Holdings and largest lender Commercial Bank of Ceylon, out of 288 listed firms.

Sri Lanka’s government funds include Employees Trust Fund, the largest local fund with more than 1 trillion rupees ($7.65 billion) in its portfolio, Employee Provident Fund, funds held by state-run banks and an insurance firm.

However, they do not invest heavily in stocks, preferring lower-risk investments. Government funds traded 36.1 billion rupees ($276 million) worth of stocks last year, compared to 66.5 billion rupees in 2011.

In the first 11 months of this year, they have accounted for only 17 billion rupees.

Government funds are much bigger than private local equity funds, but they invest heavily in government securities. Economists say the government uses them to hold down market interest rates by accepting low yields.

The market boomed in 2009 and 2010 with respective annual growth of 125.3 percent and 96 percent in the main stock index , largely due to new retail investors flocking into risky assets on a surge of optimism after the end of a 26-year war.

Since 2011, however, insider dealing and market manipulation has dented retail investor sentiment and the index is down 25.6 percent from its record high of 7,863.74 points hit on February 15, 2001.

Godahewa said that the SEC has dealt with all suspected market manipulation and the regulator aims to list two new firms per month from next year.

“We’ve something like 30 initial public offerings (IPO) earmarked right now which are likely to come to the market within next two years. But you can’t allow too many IPOs coming at the same time. So we’d like to see two IPOs a month roughly next year.”

The regulator has already ordered the main listed companies to ensure that at least 20 percent of their shares are available to trade by the end of 2016 to raise liquidity, attract foreign funds and curb manipulation.

As Colombo was rapidly developing in the South Asian region, many local and foreign investors had come forward to assist the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Colombo Mayor A. J. M. Muzammil said.

He said that the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Urban Development Authority (UDA), Ministry of Disaster Management, Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy and foreign private investors have had encouraging discussions with the CMC and he would strive hard to enlist their assistance for the systematic development of the metropolis.

According to Muzammil, many foreign countries were also willing to come to the assistance of the CMC with financial and technical assistance and they were able to take part in experience sharing programmes with countries like South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, India and Thailand. They had also sent officers to Malaysia, India, Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore for varied training programmes.

The CMC would develop relations with foreign missions, based on a clear foreign policy, to train Councillors and officers of the CMC in foreign countries, he said.

Muzammil, in presenting the Budget 2014, thanked President Mahinda Rajapaksa, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Cabinet Ministers, Governor of the Western Province Alavi Moulana, Chief Minister of the Western Province Prasanna Ranatunga and also Deputy Mayor Titus Perera, Opposition Leader of the CMC Ajantha Liyanage, Defence and Urban Development Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa for their fullest cooperation to make his municipality a success.

He also thanked Municipal Commissioner Mrs. Bhadrani Jayawardene, Municipal Treasurer K. D. Chitrapala and all other officers of the CMC and employees for all their support.
